dei miei sogni. Il mio stile potrebbe essere definito
un “surrealismo comico iper-realistico”.
Ha realizzato oltre sei mila illustrazioni, un bel
bottino. Quanto tempo impiega per fare una vignetta?
Per quelle più grandi e piene di personaggi ci posso
mettere anche un mese, le altre una o due settimane.
Ma mi piace disegnare, ancora oggi continuo
a farlo. Tutti i miei lavori sono frutto di una
grande passione.
La mostra di Genova è divisa in tre sezioni – la
natura, lo sport, la coppia – ma lei ha raccontato
con i suoi lavori anche altri aspetti della vita
umana. Cosa le ispira tanta ricchezza di colori,
temi, situazioni?
Penso che nella vita sia fondamentale interessarsi a
più cose possibili. La bellezza degli animali, l’opera, la
musica, il cinema, la passione sportiva, il tennis, il
golf, il mio futbol. Il segreto per rimanere bambini e
godersi la vita è interessarsi e giocare con quello che
ci circonda.
Maestro Guillermo è un antipersonaggio che sta alla
larga dai giornalisti e non impazzisce per gli autografi
(sfiancato dall’assalto dei fan, all’inaugurazione
della mostra di luglio, aveva proposto per
scherzo di far pagare 10 euro ad ogni firma), ma
per farlo sbottonare - lui che è conterraneo di Messi,
Maradona e Osvaldo Soriano, l’autore di Pensare
con i piedi - basta parlare di una delle sue passioni.
«Prima o poi verrò a vedere una partita del
Genoa, so che è gemellato con il Boca di Buenos
Aires. Ci gioca ancora Milito o non c’è più nessun
argentino?».
Per ora c’è tal Rodrigo Palacio - gli rispondiamo -
Non è Maradona ma con il pallone tra i piedi ci sa fare.
Anche lui fa divertire, sorride di rado e ha lo
sguardo fiero degli argentini.

This is my personal imprint; a combination which gives
a special tone to my work; that which renders the
atmosphere of my dreams. My style could be defined as
“hyper-realistic comic surrealism”.
You have made over six thousand illustrations,
quite an achievement. How long does it take you to
make a cartoon?
Some of the bigger ones, full of characters, can even
take me a month. The others, one or two weeks. But I
love to draw, I keep doing it today. All of my works are
the fruit of great passion.
The exhibition in Genoa is divided into three sections
– nature, sport, and the couple – but in your work
you have told of other aspects of human life. What
inspires such richness in colors, themes, and
situations?
I think that it is fundamental in life to be interested in
as many things as possible: the beauty of animals,
work, music, the cinema, sports, tennis, golf, my futbol.
The secret of staying young and enjoying life is to be
interested and play with all that surrounds you.
Maestro Guillermo is an anti-star, who stays away from
journalists and doesn’t like to give out autographs
(when he couldn’t escape his fans at the inauguration
of the exhibition in July, he joked that he would charge
10 euros for each signature). But the trick to get him to
talk – he who comes from the land of Messi,
Maradona, and Osvaldo Soriano, the author of Think
with Your Feet – is to speak of one of his passions.
“One of these days I’ll come to watch Genoa play. After
all, the Genoa Football Club is twinned with Boca in
Buenos Aires. Is Milito still playing, or are there no
more Argentines left on your team?”.
“We still have Rodrigo Palacio,” we respond quickly, “he
may not be Maradona, but he knows what to do with
the ball.” He also provides entertainment, rarely smiles,
and has that proud look of the Argentines.

Guillermo Mordillo è nato a Buenos
Aires nell’agosto del 1932. Esordisce
come illustratore di libri per
l’infanzia. Nel 1960 si trasferisce a
New York, dove lavora per la
Paramount come disegnatore. Tre
anni dopo comincia a collaborare con
riviste e quotidiani, da “Paris Match”
al tedesco “Der Stern”.
Ma è negli anni ’70 che Mordillo
ottiene fama planetaria, grazie ai suoi
buffi personaggi muti e dalla spiccata
gestualità. Nel corso della sua carriera
i suoi lavori sono usciti in 12 diverse
pubblicazioni.
Tra i suoi temi più cari, animali
(celebri le sue giraffe) e sport
(soprattutto calcio e golf). Le opere in

Guillermo Mordillo was born in
Buenos Aires in August of 1932. He
made his start illustrating children’s
books. In 1960 he moved to New
York, where he made drawings for
Paramount. Three years later he
began working with magazines and
newspapers from “Paris Match” to
the German, “Der Stern”, and by the
seventies, Mordillo was famous the
world over, thanks to his funny mute
characters with their expressive
gestures.
During the course of his career his
works were published in 12 different
publications. Among his favorite
themes are animals (his giraffes are
famous) and sports (especially
football and golf).

in a catalogue of the event published
