Rev. Paulius Rabikauskas SJ (1920-1998) - Church historian, connoisseur of diplomacy and palaeography. Vice-rector of Gregoriana, long time dean of the faculty of Church history, editor of Archivum Historiae Pontificiae. Among his most important works are Diplomatica pontificia (6th ed., 1998) and acclaimed edition of sources of Lithuanian history Relationes status dioecesium in Magno Ducatu Lituaniae I—II (1971-1978). Present book contains Vilnius Jesuit university (est. 1579) history studies: analysis of the establishment documents, progress of Science and development of lecturing, problems of foundation of the faculties of law and medicine. The lists of rectors are updated; questions of university properties are discussed. Some of the studies are dedicated to the XVII c. Jesuits related to the University - Lithuanian spiritual writer K. Sirvydas, to one of the most popular neo-latin poets M. C. Sarbievius, to the alumni of the University and the missionary in China A. Rudamina. Activities of Jesuit colleges in Kaunas and Pašiaušė are discussed separately, binding them into locai history context. These studies of Paulius Rabikauskas are grounded by researches in rich archive material, particularly ARSI and Vatican Secret archives. They are distinctive for their erudition, perfect knowledge of universal Church history and precise interpretation of facts.

Sebastijonas M a j e w s k i, novicas brolis, lenkas, gimęs apie 1548 m.,

į Draugiją priimtas Vilniuje 1571 m. spalio 10 d. Už šešių dienų pasiųstas

(drauge su Bolesta) į Braunsbergą atlikti noviciato. Po kelių mėnesių

grįžo vėl į Vilnių, kur buvo iš Draugijos atleistas 1572 m. kovo 11 d. 64

Martynas Socha, novicas brolis lenkas, gimęs apie 1541 m. Išmokęs

siuvėjo amato, 1571 m. birželio 2 d. Vilniuje įstojo į jėzuitus. Tų

pačių metų spalio 16 d. buvo pasiųstas drauge su Bolesta ir Majewskiu

į noviciatą Braunsberge. 65 Daugiau žinių apie jį neužtikta.

Lukas Krassowski (Crassovius, Lucas Polonus), kunigas, lenkas,

gimęs 1535 m. Liubline, į jėzuitus įstojo Augsburge 1559 m. birželio

29 d., buvo pirmasis ordino narys, kilęs iš Lenkijos, 1560-1564

metais studijavo Romoje. Įsteigiant Pultuske naują kolegiją, buvo į ten

pasiųstas drauge su kitais jėzuitais; ten 1566 m. gavėnioje gavo kunigo

šventimus. 1571 m. vasario mėn. atvyko į Vilnių ir tuojau įsijungė į

pastoracinį darbą. Tų metų gale siaučiant epidemijai, pasiliko Vilniuje

tarnauti sergantiems. Klausydamas ligonių išpažinčių, pats užsikrėtė ir

mirė 1571 m. spalio 21 d. 66

Tokiu būdu 1571 m. spalio mėn. gale, vos dvejiems metams praėjus

nuo pirmųjų jėzuitų į Vilnių atvykimo ir vieneriems metams nuo kolegijos

įsteigimo, Vilniuje gyveno iš viso 34 jėzuitai. Jų pasiskirstymas

pagal tautybes (kaip jos sužymėtos kataloge) buvo šis: 13 lenkų, 5 mozūrai,

2 ukrainiečiai, 2 vokiečiai, 2 prūsai ir po vieną: ispanas, austras,

čekas, kroatas, škotas, belgas, airis, anglas, silezietis, lietuvis (Svirys,

nes Bolestos rašant šį katalogą jau nebebuvo Vilniuje) - iš viso 15 tautybių.

Krinta į akis spartus lenkų priaugimas: kai 1570 m. spalio mėn.

buvo tik 3 lenkai ir 1 mozūras, praėjus vieneriems metams, jų skaičius
