Rev. Paulius Rabikauskas SJ (1920-1998) - Church historian, connoisseur of diplomacy and palaeography. Vice-rector of Gregoriana, long time dean of the faculty of Church history, editor of Archivum Historiae Pontificiae. Among his most important works are Diplomatica pontificia (6th ed., 1998) and acclaimed edition of sources of Lithuanian history Relationes status dioecesium in Magno Ducatu Lituaniae I—II (1971-1978). Present book contains Vilnius Jesuit university (est. 1579) history studies: analysis of the establishment documents, progress of Science and development of lecturing, problems of foundation of the faculties of law and medicine. The lists of rectors are updated; questions of university properties are discussed. Some of the studies are dedicated to the XVII c. Jesuits related to the University - Lithuanian spiritual writer K. Sirvydas, to one of the most popular neo-latin poets M. C. Sarbievius, to the alumni of the University and the missionary in China A. Rudamina. Activities of Jesuit colleges in Kaunas and Pašiaušė are discussed separately, binding them into locai history context. These studies of Paulius Rabikauskas are grounded by researches in rich archive material, particularly ARSI and Vatican Secret archives. They are distinctive for their erudition, perfect knowledge of universal Church history and precise interpretation of facts.

A. POSSEVINAS IR VILNIAUS UNIVERSITETAS

buvo išspausdinę keliolika knygų bei brošiūrų. Tačiau 1585 spaustuvės

padėtis buvo labai apverktina. „Mūsų spaustuvė, - rašė Possevinas

iš Vilniaus Lenkijos provincijolui, - nelemtai nyksta, o būtų galima ją

išsaugoti ir sugrąžinti į tobulą būklę (typographia nostra, quae male

perit, cum facillime servari possit et ad perfectum statum redigi). 9 Spaustuvė

nyko trūkstant patikimų darbininkų ir teturėdama blogus samdytus

pasauliečius spaustuvininkus bei raidžių liejikus, kaip keletą mėnesių

vėliau pranešė į Romą pats Universiteto rektorius. Čia verta pacituoti

verstą iš lotynų kalbos tikrai gyvą Possevino pasisakymą spaustuvės

reikalu kitame laiške Lenkijos provincijolui, rašytame tų pačių 1585 metų

spalio mėn.: „Kai išvykau [iš Vilniaus] į Polocką [vizituoti tenykščios

jėzuitų kolegijos], pasakiau, kad spaustuvės nelaikytų be jokios

priežiūros ir netvarkingai, bet stropiai saugotų tai, ką Dievas yra Draugijai

[t. y. jėzuitams] pavedęs. Jei reikėtų pinigų spintoms įsigyti (bet

tų pinigų ten netrūko), tepaima 20 auksinų iš sumos, kurią popiežius

skyrė seminarijai, ir už tai seminarijai atsilygina rugiais. Taip ir išvykau

į Polocką. Po 20 dienų sugrįžtu [į Vilnių], ir man sako tėvas Widmanstadtas

[Universiteto kancleris]: „Dvylika dienų apie spaustuvę nieko

negirdėjo; Pagaliau, - sako, - šiomis aštuoniomis dienomis šis tas padaryta“.

- „Ką gi taip padarėte?“ - klausiu. - „Išleidome 22 grašius". -

„Nebenorėjau daugiau ką nors sakyti. Aš apie 300 [grašių? auksinų?]

palikau tėvui Widmanstadtui, iš dalies popieriui pirkti, iš dalies trims

miesto spaustuvininkams, kurie mums spausdina [knygas] lotyniškai,

vokiškai, estiškai, latviškai, rutėniškai (gudiškai), ir tėvas Widmanstadtas

jau pasirūpino išspausdinti 6000 knygų". 10

Altum, Pater, fuit per 12 dies de typographia silentium; ad extremum

his, ait, octo diebus aliquid effectum est. Quid istud? - inquam. Viginti

duo grossi, ait, insumpti sunt. Nolui igitur aliud dicere. Trecentos ego circiter,
