Luiz Carlos Matos Marins, better known as Luiz Poeta (Luiz
the Poet), is the founder of the Verdejar Proteção Ambiental e
Humanismo (VPAH) environmental and human protection project,
whose aim is to tell stories of dreams, struggles, partnerships
and initiatives for the recovery and preservation of the Serra
da Misericórdia, the largest Atlantic rainforest area in Rio de
Janeiro's Northern Zone. With dedication and persistence, “the
Poet” has managed to preserve green areas of the Serra, to touch
people's hearts with the principles of agroecology and responsible
eating, and to involve residents, ecologists and voluntary workers
in initiatives at the Sérgio Silva community, an extension of the
Complexo do Alemão community. The seed sown by the Poet has
flourished, as have the project activities. Environmental education
activities are conducted with students and community residents at
the Chico Mendes community garden and in others at the complex.
One good example is the workshop on native rainforest plants and
ornamental and medicinal fruit trees. Verdejar's healthy nutrition
program seeks to raise awareness among young people about the
consumption and production of local, fairly-priced, healthy food
products.
