De terça-feira a quinta, os restaurantes abrem para o almoço. De
sexta-feira a domingo, todas as barracas funcionam sem parar. Para
matar a fome, a variedade é grande: carne assada acompanhada de
The São Cristóvão market is a piece of Northeast Brazil transplanted
into Rio de Janeiro. Its 700 or so stalls sell and display a bit of everything.
Here you'll find typical food and crafts, plus bandas de forró, dance
bands, pop singers and impromptu ad-lib poets. The restaurants serve
lunch only from Tuesday to Thursday, but operate all day from Friday to
Sunday. A whole variety of dishes is available: pot roasts plus side-dishes
of bean, jerk beef and rice, soft-shell crab and other crab dishes, prawns
and buchada de bode, a goat offal faggot, all served with rice, beans,
maxixe, a sort of gherkin, pumpkin and okra. End the experience by trying
to dance the forró!
