The following study reconstructs the history of the Catholic University of Petrópolis (UCP),
which was the first university in the city. Aim of this historical and documentary research is
the knowledge of the institutional trajectory of UCP, from its establishment, thanks to the
initiative of the diocesan bishop Dom Manuel Pedro da Cunha Cintra, who founded a civil
association called Faculdades Católicas Petropolitanas, in 1953, until the end of his office as
Great Chancellor in March 1984. For the collection of data, the sources used were the
documents from institutional and private archives, the tales of the ones who testify the
institution of the above mentioned period, coeval magazines and newspapers, bibliographic
and iconographic material. The analysis of the collected material has been carried on focusing
the concept of the history of the present, building a model of relationship between history and
memory. The first part of this work presents a historical synthesis about the genesis and the
specific characteristics of the Catholic University, since the Middle Ages, as well as about the
orientating principles of the Catholic Church for these school institutions, especially in Latin
America. The work describes the growth of UCP either in the structural and academic aspects,
since the idealism of its founders and the movements of the academic community which
involved professors, industrialists, intellectual people, religious and civil authorities. We have
come to the conclusion that the UCP, with its educational and institutional dynamism, based
on the relationship between faith and reason, developed the principles of its founders, offering
to the Petropolis’society Christian educational paths for a complete education of the human
being.
