on to attempt a murder on a celebrity. Similarly, the content of
this film supposedly provoked street violence. Together with A
Clockwork Orange, this film sparked off unprecedented adverse
reactions of the public. After a number of incidents the two films
became the target of paranoid accusations, while the public
blamed them for numerous unrelated mishaps.
In order to better comprehend the representation of
violence in the post-moder film, the paper tries to explain the
influence of the Hong Kong film industry and the significance of
the horror genre. Although the postmodern film violence relies
heavily on the late Hollywood film there are key dissimilarities
between the two. Two main characteristics of the postmodern
representation of violence are: lack of contact with reality and
its cartoon/film representation. In the postmodern film violence
is not inspired by reality, unlike the 1960s and the 1970s film.
The violence of the postmodern film is oriented towards the
medium itself, the history of cinematography, the mixture of
genres and citations of other films. In addition, violence is
depicted unrealistically – similar to that of cartoon films, in
which characters have super powers, can fly or dodge bullets.
During the course of one film the characters fight in multiple
genres, often first against the police and in the very next scene
against demons. The postmodern film presents a play with the
medium itself, while the violence of those films resembles the
cult violence films of the times gone by.
