anthem, and nationalistic concepts pertaining to the rights and obligations of
citizenship, national history, and national holidays“ (Vickers 1981:718).
Durch diese Arbeit ist eine neue Führungsschicht - die der Lehrer - entstanden. Diese werden jedoch
weniger gut ausgebildet als die Lehrkräfte des staatlichen Schulsystems. Obwohl kein Gottesdienst im
Schulgebäude gefeiert wird, dient die Bildungsarbeit des SIL auch der Missionierung: Nur diejenigen,
die sich bekehren lassen, haben die Chance, selbst Lehrer zu werden und so auch der neuen
Führungsschicht anzugehören (Vickers 1981:720).
Die negativen Auswirkungen der Bildungspolitik des SIL auf die Kultur der indios wurden vor allem
von David Stoll (1982), Norman Lewis (1991) und Elisabeth Rohr (1991) hervorgehoben. Anne-Christine
Taylor von der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris hat diese Vorwürfe in ihrer Arbeit
über die Achuar-indios in Ecuador zusammengefaßt:
„Children are increasingly cut off from their parents’ technical and symbolic
knowledge [...] Among Protestant evangelists [...] education quite openly implies
the rejection of traditional values. Through radio propaganda and formal
education the Protestants explicitly aim at suppressing certain fundamental
social characteristics of Achuar culture such as polygyny, shamanism, warfare,
the consumption of chicha, dancing and drinking feasts, and even ritual speech,
which felt, rightly, to be a manifestation of indigenous spiritual power, and as
such discouraged [...] The Protestant prohibition is effective because it is linked
to a critical internal contradiction attendant on nucleation [...] The evangelist
teachers exalt the virtues of hard work, technological development, and personal
capital accumulation [...] This ideology is actively inculcated to the
teachers at Limoncocha during the summer training sessions [...] The level of
education of the missionaries themselves and their anti-intellectual prejudices
do not lead them to encourage advanced or even adequate education for Indian
youths. And the evangelist maestros generally have a level of education far
inferior to that of the federation teachers [...] they cannot use the tools of a
modern education to ,white‘ means of action. A certain political awareness is,
however, emerging within the ranks of evangelist maestros“ (Taylor 1981:663-
664).
Völlig anders beurteilt die Anthropologin und Soziologin Blanca Muratorio in ihrer Studie über die Unión
Misionera Evangélica de Chimborazo (UMECH) die Bildungsarbeit evangelikaler Missionare. Zwar habe
auch hier diese Tätigkeit zur Formierung einer neuen Führungsschicht geführt und tradierte
Verhaltensweisen ausgeschaltet. Dennoch habe sie zugleich den indios eine neue Identität gegeben und ihr
Selbstbewußtsein gestärkt:
„Formal schooling is becoming a new symbol of prestige among Protestant
leaders and young people. Adult men and women are making an enormous
effort to teach themselves to read, and all listen to the basic education programs
broadcast in Quichua through the local station. The major goal is to be able to
read the Bible instead of merely learning passages by heart as they usually do
now“ (Muratorio 1981:520 u. 1983).
Immer mehr in der südlichen Hemisphäre missionarisch tätige evangelikale Lehrkräfte weisen auf die
Notwendigkeit einer Kontextualisierung der Lerninhalte und der Lehrmethoden hin. So haben z.B. Dorothy
und Earle Bowen in Kenia eine pädagogische Methode entworfen, die auf die eher synthetische und
