The conclusion to be drawn is that wealth is indeed an important factor in
explaining entrepreneurial mobility; but a more important factor is a cultural
understanding (captured by the Catholic / Protestant religious distinction) of
what capital means and why one wants to be entrepreneur in the first place“
(Annis 1987:133).
Zu den gleichen Ergebnissen ist auch Carlos Garma Navarro in seiner Studie über die protestantischen
indios in Ixtepec (Mexiko) gekommen (Garma Navarro 1987b:91-97).
Die verinnerlichte puritanische Ethik sorgt nicht nur für mehr Selbstdisziplin und Fleiß, sondern auch für
mehr „Durchsetzungsvermögen, Initiative, Organisationsvermögen, planvolles Vorgehen und
Verantwortungsbewußtsein“ (Ströbele-Gregor 1988:230) und infolgedessen für ein rationelleres Handeln.
Aufgund dieser Ethik wird auch die Korruption der Politiker und Großunternehmer von den meisten
Sektenanhängern in Lateinamerika wie in Afrika oder in Süd-Ost-Asien angeprangert. Rosalind I.J. Hackett
hat beobachtet, daß in Calabar (Nigeria) die Disziplin und die Moralität sehr geschätzt wird:
„The concern for discipline is a persistent theme not just of religious groups but
of life in general in Calabar. This stems from the moral and social dislocation
generated by the rapid growth of the town (unemployment, robbery, corruption)
and the moral climate of Nigeria in general. Sermons in the churches are full of
moral exhortations; biblical verses with an ethical orientation are popular as
sermon themes. Newspapers frequently discuss the problem of corruption and
look to the religious institutions to uphold the moral order and set an example
for the rest of society“ (Hackett 1989:330).
Die Bildungsarbeit der Sekten und NRMs ihrerseits hilft den Gläubigen, mit ihrer Umwelt besser
umzugehen, und gibt ihnen bessere Chancen auf dem Arbeitsmarkt.
