Curatorial Design
Ausstellungspraxis entsteht aus einer Verschränkung künstlerischer, kuratorischer und architektonischer
Entscheidungen, die zu konkreten Ausführungen im Raum führen. Das zugleich
modellhafte und situative Handeln bei der Konzeption und Realisierung von Ausstellungsprojekten
bildet den Mittelpunkt der transdisziplinären Seminararbeiten. Es werden im
Projektseminar konkrete Ausstellungsräume entworfen und umgesetzt: im Studienjahr 2008
die Ausstellung »Das ungebaute Berlin« im Café Moskau Berlin unter der kuratorischen Leitung
von Carsten Krohn. Gleichzeitig wird eine theoretische Vertiefung in Form einer kritischen
Aktualisierung der Ausstellungsgeschichte im Hinblick auf das jeweilige Seminarthema
geleistet; daraus entsteht die Lehrstuhlpublikation DISPLAYER, deren dritte Ausgabe im
Studienjahr 2008/2009 erarbeitet wurde.
Curatorial Design
Exhibition design consists of the interconnection of artistic, curatorial, and architectural decisions
that lead to concrete realizations in space. Our trans-disciplinary seminar work focuses
on both model and situative actions while designing and implementing exhibition projects.
In the project seminar, we draft and realize specific exhibition spaces. In the academic year
2008, this was the exhibition “Das ungebaute Berlin” [“The Unbuilt Berlin”] at Café Moskau
in Berlin under the curatorial supervision of Carsten Krohn. At the same time, theoretical focus
is consolidated in the form of a critical update on exhibition history respective to the
seminar topics. This will result in the departmental publication DISPLAYER, whose third issue
was compiled in the academic year 2008/09.
DISPLAYER 03
Ausgangspunkte für die dritte Ausgabe der Publikation »Displayer« sind die Anforderung,
Probleme, Möglichkeiten und Unmöglichkeiten des Ausstellens von Raum selbst. Hier ist mit
Sicherheit nicht der euklidische Raum gemeint, sondern Raum als ein konfliktreiches Gefü-
ge von Beziehungen, Situationen und Ereignissen. Demnach ist das Ausstellen von Raum eng
verknüpft mit performativen Handlungen, die mit Fragen nach den Anforderungen von kon-
kreten Raumkonstruktionen verknüpft sind. Raum ist das Gewebe, in dem Ereignisse statt-
finden; und wiederum sind es Ereignisse, die Raum kulturell, sozial, politisch und geogra-
fisch aktivieren. Mehr als 20 Interviews, Statements und Essays wurden ausschließlich für
»Displayer 03« produziert. Die Beiträge basieren auf intensiven mehrtätigen Workshops, sind
aber auch durch Diskussionsforen, E-Mail-Austausch sowie Telefongespräche, dialogische
und öffentliche Präsentationen, Debatten und Projekte entstanden, die durch das Curriculum
des Studiengangs initiiert wurden.

The points of departure for the third issue of “Displayer“ are the demands, challenges, and
possibilities as well as the impossibilities of exhibiting space itself. Certainly in this context,
space is not considered a mere geometric entity but a conflictual field of relations, situations
and events. Hence, the exhibition of space is strongly connected to performative acts, in ad-
dition to questions about the requirements of constructions in space. Space is the fabric in
which events occur, and events, in turn, activate space culturally, socially, politically and ge-
ographically. More than 20 interviews, statements and essays were produced exclusively for
“Displayer 03“. For the most part, the contributions of the artists, architects and writers are
based on intensive several-day workshops, but they have also been developed from panels,
email and phone conversations, dialogic talks, public presentations, debates and seminar
projects that were initiated through the program’s curriculum.
