The unquestionable high point of the past academic year fell on the day we celebrated its commencement. On 15 October, Federal President Horst Köhler honored the HfG Karlsruhe with a visit, extensively covered by regional and national media. For our students, faculty and staff, this was an event in the emphatic sense of the word. It also meant absolute craziness – something all of us were more than happy to deal with. Even weeks before the visit, the President’s staff conducted a security check of the university, and all aspects of the visit had been prepared down to the last detail. The big day as such is documented in this annual report. At this point, I would just like to add that Horst Köhler himself had initiated the visit because he wanted to tap into the expert competence on issues of culture and society at our university, for use in a closed-session discussion on “Political Symbolism in Democratic Cultures.” This discussion finally took place subsequent to the official university program – both in a smallgroup and an open-and-inspired atmosphere. We are obviously very proud of the President’s keynote speech on educational policy, which he had held beforehand for honorary guests, faculty, staff, and students of HfG. We were pleased with his emphasis on “strong-mindedness”: He was spot-on in describing the essence of our university and the majority of those who work here. Among the numerous activities of our faculty and staff during the reporting period, I would like to highlight the second “edition” of the international conference, “Design Blast,” which – as in the previous year – was organized by the Department of Communication Design, headed by Prof. Sven Voelker. Remarkable this time was that only women’s design positions were presented. I am glad to report that the “guest acts” of some of these renowned women designers have already resulted in further activities at HfG, such as teaching appointments or conducting workshops. The Department of Product Design, headed by Volker Albus, has also particularly shone in creativity. The edition “kkaarrlls“ is nothing less than an attempt at reinventing the world of objects. Among others, the visitors of the “Salone Internazionale del Mobile” in Milan in April 2009 were able to see this first-hand. In the unconventional artifacts of the 17 young designers, the HfG-spirit had taken on the shape of utility objects and pieces of furniture. The activities of the Department of Media Art all displayed the tendency to expand the HfG atriums’ [Lichthöfe] sphere of influence into public space. This was, for example, true for the exhibition “inside / outside,” organized by Michael Bielicky at the university and at the ruin of the Frauenalb Convent, or for the film portraits Thomas Heise and his students had made of “People after Work” in Karlsruhe. At the end of the spring semester 2009, we finally had to bid farewell to two colleagues resigning from their teaching positions at HfG: Elger Esser, Professor for Photography, and Boris Groys, Professor for Philosophy and Media Theory. I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for their commitment to our university. To our readers, I wish some inspiring discoveries in this annual report, whose tried-and-tested layout has been carefully improved. Rektor / Rector Prof. Peter Sloterdijk
