other cultures be integrated, and how does this perspective inevitably change the view of Eu-
ropean history? At the renowned Internationales Wissenschaftsforum of the University of
Heidelberg (IWH) [center for scholarly exchange in all areas of science and academic research]
we discussed these questions with research training group fellows, researchers, and acade-
mics from Japan, Korea, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, and Egypt. This concurrently created
first platforms that are absolutely essential to future scholarly exchange between the different
fields in a global context.
In a smaller, but still top-notch group, we dealt with the central issues of the course and research
program of the Graduiertenkolleg [Research Training Group]. “Re:Presentations. Responses
to the Crisis” was the title of the workshop planned by doctoral researchers and fellows
Anja Schürmann, Florian Lippert, Mirjam Wittmann, and Tim Urban. What is the current
relationship between presentation and representation, particulary from a philosophical
perspective, but also from an artistic point of view? To this workshop we had invited wellknown
philosophers Sybille Krämer (Berlin), Dieter Mersch (Potsdam), and Lambert Wiesing
(Jena), as well as theater scholar Franziska Schössler (Trier), and art historian Carolin Meister
(Berlin). This was followed by the workshop “Autokinetics: Technical Images, Self-Reference
and Mediality” in December 2008, for which we had acquired, among others, media anthropologist
Manfred Faßler (Frankfurt).
The year 2009 held a very special and long-awaited event in store for us, planned primarily
by research training group members Sebastian Baden and Jörg Scheller: a conference together
with the Department of Art History and Archeology at Columbia University – significantly
entitled “At the Boundaries” – that took place in New York on 23-24 January. How are
the former boundaries of European and North-American art history, philosophy, and archeology
changing today, but also in the history of an increasingly globalized culture? How are
the coordinates of “my own” and “foreign” changing? U.S. and European doctoral students
discussed these topics from many different angles. This was complemented by a relevant keynote
lecture by Beat Wyss, spokesperson of our Graduiertenkolleg [Research Training Group].
For June 2009, we had in turn extended an invitation for conference participants to come to
HfG [Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design] and ZKM [Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe].
For the Karlsruhe conference from 26 to 28 June, we slightly altered the focus: “At the
Boundaries of Images,” i.e. the issues of shifting boundaries and of the extension of what we
call images. Not only have the new technological conditions played an important role in this,
but also cultural changes in a global perspective. The keynote lecture in Karlsruhe was held
by Keith Moxey, renowned U.S. professor for Visual Culture Studies at Columbia University.
In addition, the new ZKM project “Global Art and the Museum,” supervised by Hans Belting,
Andrea Buddensieg, and Peter Weibel, was presented.
In May 2009, we finally attended another conference, this time at the Universidad Autonoma
in Madrid, which once again expanded the cultural coordinates of the current discussions
and allowed our doctoral researchers to put their research up for comparison at an international
level.
