downtown Karlsruhe. In the exhibition “Wahlheimat,” which took place there from 7 June to
28 September, 20 art projects were presented that had been democratically elected into the
exhibition beforehand.
It was the objective of the Project “Wahlheimat” to extend the democratic election process to
a cultural event. In this exhibition, hosted and organized by HfG and ZKM [Center for Art and
Media Karlsruhe], it is the audience who exerts the power. The curators who are usually responsible
for selecting the works of art are replaced by people interested in art. The first Karlsruhe
art election campaign took place in April and May. More than 7,000 Internet users on
www.superwahlheimat.de voted on more than 30 candidates and their projects.
Following the soccer exhibition “Gib mich die Kirsche” [Me Give the Cherry] and the physics
exhibition “Experimenta+” (both in 2008), “Wahlheimat” [Home of Choice] was the third project
HfG and ZKM have realized at Nancyhalle.
HfG was not only responsible for the organization and architecture of the exhibition – as well
as designing the website (www.superwahlheimat.de) – we above all made sure the (art) election
via email and SMS ran smoothly. In addition, comprehensive election statistics were
drawn up after the elections.

Die Einbeziehung der bundesdeutschen Städte und kommunalen Einrichtungen in die Wissenschaftsjahre
des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung wird seit 2007 von HfG,
ZKM und dem Deutschen Städtetag gemeinsam realisiert. Im »Wissenschaftsjahr 2008 – Jahr
der Mathematik« wurde hierfür ein »Planspiel Stadt« entwickelt, welches etwa 700 Kindern
und Jugendlichen aus 22 Städten den Einfluss von Mathematik im öffentlichen Raum aufzeigte.
Im »Wissenschaftsjahr 2009 – Forschungsexpedition Deutschland« wurde erfolgreich an
die Kooperation mit BMBF und Deutschem Städtetag angeknüpft. Gefördert von der Robert
Bosch Stiftung wird nun die Einbeziehung der bundesdeutschen Städte über zwei Hauptaktivitäten
realisiert: Die »Treffpunkte der Wissenschaft« stehen für zentrale Forschungsthemen
von überregionaler Bedeutung und an der »Forschungsexpedition Stadt« sind über 100 Gruppen
mit über 2.700 Teilnehmern aus allen Altersklassen in mehr als 60 Städten beteiligt.
3 Year of Science [Wissenschaftsjahr]
For the Years of Science, The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) partners up
with cities and municipal institutions. Since 2007, HfG, ZKM [Center for Art and Media Karl-
sruhe], and the German Conference of Cities have actively been practicing this type of coop-
eration: For the “Year of Science 2008 – The Year of Mathematics,” we developed a “City
Simulation” that showed the impact of mathematics in the public space to around 700 chil-
dren and young people from 22 cities. In the “Year of Science 2009 – Research Expedition Ger-
many” we have successfully continued our cooperation with BMBF and the German Conference
of Cities. Sponsored by the Robert Bosch Foundation, the German cities are involved in
two main activities: The “Meeting Points of Science” stand for central areas of research of supra-regional
importance. More than 100 groups with more than 2,700 participants of all ages
in more than 60 cities join in the “Research Expedition City.”
