Avoid Red Arrows
Students Marko Grewe, Steffi Miller, Simon Roth, and Peter Stahmer of the Department of
Communication Design at the beginning of 2009 founded the group “Avoid Red Arrows” for
type design at the HfG. This stemmed from the desire to continue the class temporarily offered
in font design, for which I had invited Sereina Rothenberger, Ludovic Varone, and Philipp
Herrmann from Zurich. The four students regularly conduct “Type Camps,” i.e. 3-day work-
shops that are open to students of all departments. To promote the project and to make the
student-developed type fonts accessible to potential buyers, Grewe, Miller, Roth, and Stahmer
developed the Internet platform www.avoidredarrows.de. In the spring semester 2009, they
were awarded the Günther-Schroff-Scholarship for their work on “Avoid Red Arrows”.

Dieses interdisziplinäre Seminar fand in Zusammenarbeit mit Harry Kresin, Lehrbeauftragter
des Fachbereichs und Ludger Pfanz, Fachbereich Medienkunst/Film, statt. Die Übersetzung
einer Geschichte in ein Kurzdrehbuch und die Entwicklung von Storyformen waren ebenso
ein Thema wie der Einsatz adäquater Technik und die Vertonung der Filme.

This interdisciplinary seminar was conducted in cooperation with Harry Kresin, who holds a
teaching appointment at our department, and Ludger Pfanz from the Department of Media Art /
Film. The translation of a story into a short script and the development of story forms were
as much a topic as the use of suitable technology and adding a soundtrack to the films.

Mit »Typomatinée« wurde die Vortragsreihe der letzten Jahre fortgesetzt. Diesmal waren zu
Gast: Julia Hasting, Phaidon Press Director (Zürich), Julia Born & Laurenz Brunner (Amster-
dam), Marko Walser von Elektrosmog (Zürich) und Ralph Schraivogel (Zürich). Die Gäste gaben
Einblicke in gestalterische Strategien, selbst initiierte Projekte, Publikationen und Plakatent-
wicklungen. Wir diskutierten Trends, Auftragssituationen, den Kontakt mit Auftraggebern
und wie ich mich nach dem Studium als Kommunikationsdesigner/in durchsetzen kann.

“Typomatinée” continues the lecture series of the last years. Our guest speakers this time

sight into design strategies, self-initiated projects, publications, and poster designs. We dis-
cussed trends, commissions and contract situations, contact to clients, and how our graduates
in Communication Design can establish themselves in the market upon completing their
studies.
