I am hoping to establish a long-term basis for cooperation between SIK and HfG at the Col-
laborative Research Center Technology as Culture [Sonderforschungsbereich “Technik als Kul-
tur”] that is to be set up in Karlsruhe. On 24 October, 2008, we had a working conference in
order to submit the project. The research objective of my chair, entitled “Competitive Exhibition”
[Die Leistungsschau], analyzes biennales and world exhibitions and is based on a network
of partner organizations. To serve this objective, I visited the Instituto Svizzero di Roma
(19 to 25 May, 2008) and attended a working conference in Venice with the Fondazione Cini,
representatives of Faculty of Arts and Design of the IUAV, and the Biennale Archive (16 to 18
October, 2008). In addition, I participated in a round table of consultants on the topic of art
and art history in Central and Eastern Europe at Clark Institute in Williamstown (19 to 26
April, 2009). The institute’s director, Michael Ann Holly, in turn visited SIK in Zurich and the
UBS Arts Forum in Wolfsberg, ending his trip with a workshop of our Graduiertenkolleg [Research
Training Group] in Karlsruhe (22 to 28 June, 2009). Thus, we come full circle.
The Graduiertenkolleg [Research Training Group], whose spokesperson I have been since
2003, also travelled quite extensively. From 21 to 28 October, 2009, we conducted a workshop
together with students of Columbia University in New York entitled “At the Boundaries of the
Image.” My introductory lecture dealt with “Vasari the Etruscan, Totemism and Cultural
Identity.” The work meeting was continued at the above-mentioned workshop in Karlsruhe
at the end of June 2009. This was complemented by two dinners, which fortified our friendly
relations and gave us the opportunity to show just how hospitable our university is. Another
workshop was held at the Universidad Autonoma in Madrid from 11 to 14 May, 2009, focusing
on image science and philosophy. My lecture, “The Schopenhauer Galaxy,” gave an overview
of my book, “Der Wille zur Kunst,” whose Spanish translation will be published in autumn of
this year.
My activities on behalf of the German Research Foundation (DFG) went beyond my function
as spokesperson. As a member of the expert committee, I participated in the evaluation of the
Weimar Graduiertenkolleg [Research Training Group] “Medial Historiographies.” I had also
occupied this consulting function during the founding phase of the research training group.
This year, I only actively participated in conferences that emphasized my current research
interest. I gave the following lectures and presentations: “Surprising India, New Perspectives
on Contemporary Art” (9/10 November, 2008) and “Horizonte des Sammelns, Strukturen und
Trends” [Horizons of Collecting, Structures and Trends] (6/7 April, 2009), both at UBS Arts Forum
in Wolfsberg; “Nachleben und Rekonstruktion, Vergangenheit im Bild” [Afterlife and Reconstruction,
Past in the Image] at the annual conference eikones in Bale (13 to 15 November,
2008); “Eine bessere Welt, Kunst und Politik” [A Better World. Art and Politics] at Bonn Kunsthalle
(28 November, 2008); “Giotto–Rothko,” Study Day at National Gallery Berlin (05 February,
2009); “Theorie Theorie“ [Theory Theory] at InterUniversity Center in Dubrovnik (26
to 29 March, 2009); and “Internationalisation des arts et mise en scène de la nation” at Institut
national de l’histoire de l’art in Paris (11–13 June, 2009).
