the Post-Histoire” (fall semester) and “The Symbolic Exchange” (spring semester). Prof. Peter<br />

Sloterdijk went on sabbatical in the fall semester 2008/09 in order to finish his book, “Du<br />

mußt Dein Leben ändern. Über Anthropotechniken” [You Have to Change Your Life. On An-<br />

thropo-Techniques.]. The students then benefited directly from this work in the spring semes-<br />

ter of 2009, in a seminar by the title “Anthropo-Techniques, Traditional and Modern,” con-<br />

ducted in cooperation with the Academic Assistant to the Rector, Marc Jongen, M.A. In the<br />

fall semester, Marc Jongen also held a textual-study seminar on the question of the “Return<br />

of Religion?” in contemporary philosophy. Prof. Carlos Oliveira served as Visiting Professor<br />

for Philosophy and Aesthetics in the fall semester, and Prof. Giovanni Leghissa in the spring<br />

semester. Prof. Oliveira examined “Aesthetic Theories and Art Philosophies” from the ancient<br />

world to the present in one seminar, and in another, put to the test “Critical Theory(ies) –<br />

Then and Now.” Prof. Leghissa, together with the Vice Rector of <strong>HfG</strong>, Dr. Uwe Hochmuth,<br />

M.A., undertook a “Criticism of Neoliberal Reason,” or an “Attempt at a Deconstruction of the<br />

Economic Discourse.” He also offered an “Introduction to Cultural Studies,” which examined<br />

the discipline’s genealogy and political significance. Prof. Heiner Mühlmann’s teaching appointment<br />

encompassed both the fall and spring semesters and allowed him to continue his<br />

multi-semester teaching and research project at the <strong>HfG</strong> on “Philosophical and Experimental<br />

Rhetoric.” In the fall semester, he was assisted by neurologist, linguist, and lecturer Dr. Thomas<br />

Grunwald of the Swiss Epilepsy Center in Zurich, who used ERP [Event-Related Potential]measurements<br />

to measure students’ brain responses in order to document and improve the effects<br />

of training. In the spring semester, Prof. Mühlmann, together with Prof. Wilfried Kühn,<br />

also conducted a seminar on “Reconstructivism, Ornamental Architecture, and the Use of<br />

Adornment in General.” Department research staff member, Barbara Kuon, M.A., taught a<br />

seminar called “Deep Down” in the fall semester, which looked at philosophical materialism<br />

from antiquity to the present. In the spring semester, she held a seminar on “Product Fetishism”<br />

in the works of Marx, Benjamin, Adorno, and others. In addition, the following teaching<br />

appointments were assigned for the fall semester 2008/09: Prof. Hinderk Emrich and Prof.<br />

Edgar Reitz (“The Philosophy of Space in Cinema”), Dr. Joseph Cohen (“Derrida and the Problem<br />

of Philosophy“), Matthias Müller, M.A. (“Neuroscience and Aesthetics”), as well as Dr.<br />

Christoph Narholz and Dr. Cai Werntgen (“The Glass Palace and its Criticism”).<br />

Exkursionen<br />

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich besuchte im Zuge seines Seminars »Kunst in der DDR« die Ausstel-<br />

lung »Kunst und Kalter Krieg. Deutsche Positionen 1945 bis 1989« im Germanischen National-<br />

museum in Nürnberg. Ihre Lehre ergänzend studierte Prof. Dr. Julia Gelshorn in Paris Dar-<br />

stellungen von Privatheit und Repräsentation in der Genremalerei und in Porträts der Samm-<br />

lungen. Gemeinsam beobachteten beide Professoren mit Studenten das Phänomen »Kunst-<br />

messe« und die Lage des Kunstmarktes auf der Art Basel. Die 53. Biennale di Venezia<br />

motivierte Robert Eikmeyer zu einer Erkundung. Marc Jongen besuchte mit seinen Studenten<br />

den Freiburger »diskursiven Salon« zum Thema »Paulus – die Umschreibung des Messias«, an<br />

dem neben Peter Sloterdijk auch Norbert Bolz und Uwe Jochum teilnahmen.<br />

Art Research and Media Theory<br />

Prof. Wolfgang Ullrich, as part of his seminar “Art in the GDR,” visited the exhibition “Art and<br />

the Cold War. German Positions from 1945 to 1989” [Kunst und Kalter Krieg. Deutsche Posi-<br />

tionen 1945 bis 1989] at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum [Germanic National Museum] in<br />

Nuremberg. To complement her courses, Dr. Julia Gelshorn studied expressions of privacy<br />

and representation in genre painting and in the portraits of the collections in Paris. Togeth-<br />

er, both professors and their students analyzed the phenomenon of the “art show” and the sit-<br />

uation of the art market at the Art Basel. Robert Eikmeyer visited the 53rd Biennale di Ven-<br />

ezia. Marc Jongen and his students attended the Freiburg “Discourse Salon” [diskursiver Sa-<br />

lon] on the topic “Paul – Transcribing the Messiah” [Paulus – die Umschreibung des Messias].<br />

In attendance were also Peter Sloterdijk, Norbert Bolz, and Uwe Jochum.<br />
