The fall and spring semester classes were characterized by a combination of theoretical con-
tent, coupled with our own exhibitions and excursions. In the event series “The History of
Video Art” and the colloquia, the students’ current works were discussed in the context of
contemporary Media Art. Anja Casser, Director of the Badische Kunstverein [Baden Art Society]
Karlsruhe, and Irina Yashkova, curator from Moscow and co-curator of the “1st Moscow
International Biennale for Young Art,” linked to the latest questions in curatorial practice in
their lectures in the ”Visiting“-series. These guest-speakers focused their lectures on media
and concept art in Eastern Europe and Central Russia, as well as on the difficulty of unlocking
long-lost or absolutely unknown works.
In small and large excursions throughout the two semesters, we visited and discussed important
artistic positions in a wide variety of exhibition concepts. “Rotor – Germany in Autumn”
[Rotor – Deutschland im Herbst] at the Ursula Blickle Foundation [Ursula Blickle Stiftung],
Kraichtal, did not first and foremost present art. The interdisciplinary group Rotor from Brussels
was instead dedicated to the recycling of industrial waste and the illustration of such
processes. Post-industrial elements were also the starting point for the Manifesta 7. As the
European Biennial of Contemporary Art, the exhibition extended across the entire region of
Trentino / South Tyrol, Italy. We were able to visit numerous exhibits over a stretch of 150
Neue Medien /New Media
kilometers. The 53rd Venice Biennale, entitled “Making Worlds,” emphasized the creative
process, allowing us to find answers in a globalized world that is growing increasingly closer
together. As the golden standard of all exhibitions, the Biennale was fittingly complemented
by our visit to the “Viennafair,” Vienna’s largest art fair.
The students could now transfer these impressions to their own exhibitions. While preparing
for the annual exhibition “Sommerloch” in July 2009, and during the excursion and exhibition
tour to Vienna in May 2009, the students faced the professional requirements of tight deadlines.
In only one week, two exhibitions were realized in Vienna from scratch – from selecting
the works to organizing the equipment and finally hosting the opening. At the “Fluc,” the students
designed an evening of performance and screening that was concluded at the Kunstsalon
“In der Kubatur des Kabinetts” [Fluc art salon] with our very own HfG DJ-set. Contrary to
the “Fluc,” the “Ve.Sch – Raum und Form für bildende Kunst” [association for the promotion
of new interpretations of space and form in fine art] offered a more conventional exhibition
space. Parallel to the Vienna Art Week, the following students presented their current works
– videos, installations, and graphical pieces under the title “Ruh Karli Ruh” [Rest Karli Rest]:
Benedikt Dichganos, Carmen Donet, Oliver Herrmann, Lukas Kindermann, Katrin Agnes Klar,
Kilian Kretschmer, Christoph Lai, Kevin Matweew, Grazyna Roguski, Jan Schumann, Thorsten
Schwanninger, Ines Wuttke, and Seon Yeong I.
The fall semester was complemented by two more technical courses. Apart from the DVD Studio
Basics course, the High-Speed Camera workshop – in cooperation with the Karlsruhe-based
company High Speed Vision – gave valuable insight into the presentation of time in images.
