Spending on tankers halved<br />
The gold rush on the tanker markets<br />
has cooled off quite a bit compared<br />
to 2<strong>01</strong>4 and 2<strong>01</strong>5 levels. The peak in newbuild<br />
spending has been in 2<strong>01</strong>5 with<br />
20.8 bn $ in tanker orders. The grand total<br />
for 2<strong>01</strong>8 stood at only 9.1 bn $. The second<br />
hand market has seen the best total<br />
spent in 2<strong>01</strong>4 with 15 bn $. In 2<strong>01</strong>8 this<br />
number was down to 6.9 bn $.<br />
The buyers’ darlings between 2<strong>01</strong>2 and<br />
2<strong>01</strong>8 have been Handy Tankers and<br />
VLCCs in both the newbuild and the second<br />
hand markets. Aframaxes came in<br />
third, followed by Small Tankers and Suezmaxes.<br />
While Panamaxes still experienced<br />
some demand from newbuild and<br />
second hand buyers, the Post-Panamax<br />
size still has only a niche role. n<br />
