HISTOKT OF THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMERICA.<br />

In 1829 Mr, Cooper made some experiments witli<br />

lis little locomotive, tuilt upon <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple lie <strong>first</strong><br />

adopted ; but, as it did not perform as well as lie ex-<br />

pected and desired, lie changed his plan, and, after<br />

some delays, made, as one may say, tlie <strong>first</strong> actual ex-<br />

perimental trip on Saturday, August 28, 1830, A full<br />

and particular account <strong>of</strong> tMs experiment lias been<br />

given tlie author by Mr, W<strong>in</strong>ans himself, who was<br />

present on <strong>the</strong> occasion, and took a lively <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> result. Mr, W<strong>in</strong>ans writes<br />

" On Saturday, <strong>the</strong> 28tli <strong>of</strong> August last, 1830, <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> railrciad-<br />

car propelled by steam proceeded <strong>the</strong> whole distance from Baltimore<br />

to Ellicott's Mills, and tested a most i<strong>in</strong>portant pr<strong>in</strong>ciple—that<br />

curvatures <strong>of</strong> 400 feet radius <strong>of</strong>fer no material impediment to <strong>the</strong><br />

use <strong>of</strong> steam-power on railroads, when <strong>the</strong> wheels are constructed<br />

with a cone, on <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed by Mr. Knight, chief<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, to be applicable<br />

to such curvatures. <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>in</strong> England have been<br />

so decidedly <strong>of</strong> op<strong>in</strong>ion that locomotive steam-eng<strong>in</strong>es could not<br />

be used on curved rails, that it was much doubted whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong><br />

many curvatures on <strong>the</strong> Baltimore and Ohio Railroad would not ex-<br />

clude <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> steam-power. We congratulate our fellow-citizens<br />

on <strong>the</strong> conclusive pro<strong>of</strong>, which removes forever all doubt on this<br />

subject, and establishes <strong>the</strong> fact that steam-power may be used on<br />

our road with as much facility and effect as that <strong>of</strong> horses, at a<br />

very reduced expense.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e " (Cooper's locomotive-eng<strong>in</strong>e) " started from Pratt<br />

Street depot, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lead <strong>of</strong> a tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> carriages. <strong>The</strong> power<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e is a little, if any, over that <strong>of</strong> one horse, and it can<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore only be regarded as a work<strong>in</strong>g model. Immediately on<br />

front <strong>of</strong>, and connected with it, was a passenger-carriage conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

(<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e attendants) twenty-four persons. <strong>The</strong><br />

aggregate weight <strong>of</strong> carriages, persons, fuel, and water, as nearly<br />

as could be ascerta<strong>in</strong>ed, was .estimated to be from four to four<br />

and a half tons, Notwithstand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> great disproportion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g power to <strong>the</strong> load, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g highly-gratify<strong>in</strong>g results<br />

were obta<strong>in</strong>ed; <strong>the</strong> time was accurately noted by dis<strong>in</strong>terested<br />

gentlemen, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> respectability<br />
