STEPHENSON'S ENGINE 49<br />

turned, after a year's a"bseiice, to Kill<strong>in</strong>gwortli, on foot,<br />

as lie had gone, and was soon at work as brakesman at<br />

<strong>the</strong> lift<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>e on <strong>the</strong> West Moore pit.<br />

In 1807 George Stephenson meditated upon emi-<br />

grat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>America</strong>; but found himself too poor to<br />

pay his passage, and was compelled to abandon <strong>the</strong><br />

project. To his 'earn<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>n he added <strong>the</strong> repair<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong> clocks and watches, and <strong>the</strong> cutt<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>s<br />

for <strong>the</strong> wives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workmen to make up. Thus did<br />

this energetic and untir<strong>in</strong>g man persevere and labor for<br />

At that early period every part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e had to be<br />

made by hand, and hammered <strong>in</strong>to shape as a horse-<br />

shoe was; and John Thorswall, <strong>the</strong> colliery blacksmith,<br />

and with all <strong>the</strong>se disadvan-<br />

was his chief workman ; ,<br />

tages and difficulties to contend with, Mr. Stephenson<br />

persevered and f<strong>in</strong>ally completed his <strong>first</strong> locomotive.<br />

It will no doubt be <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g to our mechanical<br />
