<strong>The</strong> graduates and students <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cooper Union grate-<br />

fully desire to commemorate Tooth <strong>the</strong> eightieth anniversary <strong>of</strong><br />

your birth, celebrated February 12, 1871, and <strong>the</strong> gifts whereby<br />

you made <strong>the</strong> day memorable.<br />

" <strong>The</strong>y have, <strong>the</strong>refore, selected this occasion as most appro-<br />

priate, to present to you <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g address<br />

mechanic, dist<strong>in</strong>guished for rare <strong>in</strong>genuity and versatility; as a<br />

merchant, famous for sagacity, enterprise, and uprightness ; as a<br />

patriot, pass<strong>in</strong>g beyond <strong>the</strong> bounds <strong>of</strong> section and party, to sus-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong> public measures that embrace <strong>the</strong> permanent welfare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
