HISTORY OF THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMERICA.<br />

occasion. Let us complete <strong>the</strong> grand design <strong>of</strong> Columbus by putt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Europe and Asia <strong>in</strong>to communication, and that to our advantage,<br />

through <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> our own country. Let us give to his ships,<br />

converted <strong>in</strong>to cars, a cont<strong>in</strong>uous course unknown to all former<br />

times. Let us make <strong>the</strong> iron road, and make it from sea to sea<br />

States and <strong>in</strong>dividuals mak<strong>in</strong>g it east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mississippi, <strong>the</strong> nation<br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g it west. Let us now, <strong>in</strong> this convention, rise above every<br />

th<strong>in</strong>g sectional, personal, local ; let us beseech <strong>the</strong> national legislature<br />

to build <strong>the</strong> great road upon <strong>the</strong> great national l<strong>in</strong>e which<br />

unites Europe and Asia— ^<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e which will f<strong>in</strong>d on our cont<strong>in</strong>ent<br />

<strong>the</strong> bay <strong>of</strong> San Francisco at one end, St. Louis <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle, <strong>the</strong><br />

national metropolis and great commercial emporiums at <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

and which shall, be adorned with its crown<strong>in</strong>g honor^ <strong>the</strong> colossal<br />

statue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great Columbus, whose design it accomplishes, hewn<br />

from <strong>the</strong> granite mass <strong>of</strong> a peak <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rocky Mounta<strong>in</strong>s, overlook-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> rpad, <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong> itself <strong>the</strong> pedestal and <strong>the</strong> statue a part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>, po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, with outstretched arm, to <strong>the</strong> western<br />

horizon, and say<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> fly<strong>in</strong>g passenger, '<strong>The</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> East<br />

TMs lias been consummated ; and is it all that is<br />

to be ? We answer, No ! Almost every daily revolu-<br />

tion 6f tlie earth upon its axis develops some new idea,<br />

some improvement upon what has already been accom-<br />

plished <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> railroad and its auxiliary, <strong>the</strong><br />

locomotive, nearer and nearer to a state <strong>of</strong> perfec-<br />

tion. With<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last few years <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

narrow gauge has, as we may almost say, been conceived<br />

and sprung <strong>in</strong>to existence, and, from experiments made,<br />

it has been demonstrated to a certa<strong>in</strong>ty to possess all<br />

<strong>the</strong> advantages that could have been conceived, even<br />

exceed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most sangu<strong>in</strong>e expectations <strong>of</strong> its pro-<br />

jectors, and decid<strong>in</strong>g its ultimate success.<br />

<strong>The</strong> future improvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> locomotive, when<br />

fully consummated, before ano<strong>the</strong>r half century shall<br />

pass away, will confer upon man nearly as much new<br />

power and new enjoyment as if he were actually endowed<br />

with wiags.<br />
