whiffs <strong>of</strong> steam <strong>in</strong> acknowledgment that <strong>the</strong> compliment to our<br />

company was felt and appreciated. Never were <strong>the</strong> three ruffles<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drum more gratify<strong>in</strong>g to my feel<strong>in</strong>gs when military ardor<br />

« fired my breast.' On our return, it aga<strong>in</strong> headed <strong>the</strong> column.<br />

We came to Sans-Souci <strong>in</strong> quick and double-quick time. Here we<br />

stopped to take up a recruit<strong>in</strong>g-party—darted forth like a live<br />

rocket, scatter<strong>in</strong>g sparks and flames on ei<strong>the</strong>r side— passed over<br />

three salt-water creeks, hop, step, and jump, and landed us aU safe<br />

at <strong>the</strong> L<strong>in</strong>es before any <strong>of</strong> us had time to determ<strong>in</strong>e whe<strong>the</strong>r or<br />

not it was prudent to be scared. It beats <strong>the</strong> Dumb Chess-Player<br />

One more account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> performances <strong>of</strong> tte " Best<br />

Friend," and we will leave her mmn<strong>in</strong>g upon tlie rail-<br />

road? <strong>in</strong> her daily rout<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> duty.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se extracts, from one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most respectable<br />

journals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time, will tend to prove that as early as<br />

<strong>the</strong> months <strong>of</strong> November and December, 1830, and<br />

January, 1831, <strong>the</strong> " Best Friend " was <strong>in</strong> existence, and<br />

runn<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a Eailroad<br />

" On Saturday last, <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> ar^niversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> commencement<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> railroad was celebrated. Notice hav<strong>in</strong>g been previously<br />

given, <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> stockholders, about one hundred and fifty as-<br />

sembled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> company's build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> L<strong>in</strong>e Street, toge<strong>the</strong>r with a number <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vited guests. <strong>The</strong><br />

wea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> day and night previous had been stormy, and <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g was cold and cloudy. Anticipat<strong>in</strong>g a postponement <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ceremonies, <strong>the</strong> locomotive-eng<strong>in</strong>e ' Best Friend, <strong>of</strong> Charleston,'<br />

had been taken to pieces for clean<strong>in</strong>g, but upon <strong>the</strong> assembl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> company she was put <strong>in</strong> order, <strong>the</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>ders new packed, and<br />

at <strong>the</strong> word, <strong>the</strong> apparatus ready for movement. <strong>The</strong> <strong>first</strong> trip<br />
