<strong>The</strong> <strong>America</strong>n Locomotive " De Witt Cl<strong>in</strong>tois"," Mr. D<br />

<strong>The</strong> locomotive " De Witt Cl<strong>in</strong>ton " was ordered by John B. Jervis, chief eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, and was <strong>the</strong> third locomotive built <strong>in</strong> Ame<br />

taken to Albany <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> June, 1831, and was put upon <strong>the</strong> road and run by David Mat<strong>the</strong>w. <strong>The</strong> <strong>first</strong> experimental trial-trip was made on <strong>the</strong> 5th <strong>of</strong> Jul;<br />

from Albany to Schenectady on August 9, 1831, on which occasion <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> this History <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Early Locomotives <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong> rode <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cars (only <strong>the</strong> fir<br />

nounced a truthful representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> locomotive, tender, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> cars <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>, and correct likenesses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer and passengers rep<br />

<strong>of</strong> black paper with a pair <strong>of</strong> scissors, a peculiar art with which <strong>the</strong> author was gifted from his earliest boyhood. <strong>The</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al picture was presented by <strong>the</strong> author to<br />

valued for its antiquity and truthfulness. <strong>The</strong> names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer and passengers are as follows, commenc<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e : David Mat<strong>the</strong>w, eng<strong>in</strong>eer ; <strong>first</strong> c<br />
