HISTORY OF THE FIKST LOCOMOTIVES JN AMERICA.<br />

John Degnon, No. 48 First. Street. At <strong>the</strong> same time<br />

he addressed a letter to a friend <strong>in</strong> Charleston, request-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g him to <strong>in</strong>stitute <strong>the</strong> strictest <strong>in</strong>quiries <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sub-<br />

ject. To <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> letter to New York, <strong>the</strong> author re-<br />

ceived <strong>in</strong> reply a letter from James H. Degnon, <strong>the</strong> son<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aforesaid John Degnon, <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> author<br />

that his fa<strong>the</strong>r had but a few days before brea<strong>the</strong>d his<br />

last, and that he would procure all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation upon<br />

his fa<strong>the</strong>r's mission, with <strong>the</strong> necessary vouchers from<br />

<strong>the</strong> best authorities, to establish his claim to <strong>the</strong> honor<br />

<strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>in</strong> reference to <strong>the</strong> " Best<br />

Friend." Two years have passed away, but not one<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e from young Degnon, to substantiate his fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

claim, has come to hand. Meanwhile, thanks to <strong>the</strong><br />

author's friend <strong>in</strong> Charleston, and unfortunately for Mr.<br />

Degnon, <strong>the</strong>re is still ano<strong>the</strong>r liv<strong>in</strong>g witness, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> per-<br />

son <strong>of</strong> Julius D, Petsch, Esq., who will speak for him-<br />

self. Mr. Petsch is probably <strong>the</strong> oldest mach<strong>in</strong>ist <strong>in</strong><br />

our country. He was connected, as " chief mechanical<br />

super<strong>in</strong>tendent," with <strong>the</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a Eailroad, under<br />

its most successful adm<strong>in</strong>istration, and is still. We<br />

would like to know upon what railroad Mr. Degnon<br />

ga<strong>in</strong>ed his experience, ia those early days <strong>of</strong> railroads,<br />

to be able to teach any person how to run a locomotive.<br />

<strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g is Mr. Petsch's statement to <strong>the</strong><br />

author<br />

:<br />

"Deae Sir:<br />

" I noticed an article <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bural Carol<strong>in</strong>ian, <strong>in</strong> reference to<br />

Mr. Nicholas W. Darrell be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> locomotive<br />

' Best Friend,' and fully substantiate what is <strong>the</strong>re narrated. ,<br />

have subsequently seen an article <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scientific <strong>America</strong>n, <strong>in</strong><br />

which a Mr. Degnon, claims be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> -<strong>first</strong> man who run <strong>the</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e<br />

' Best Friend,' and <strong>in</strong>structed Mr. Darrell for three months,<br />

which statement is entirely <strong>in</strong>correct. I will give <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ' Best Friend ' <strong>in</strong> as few words as possible, which is as follows<br />
