HISTOET OF THE FIRST LOCOMOTITES IN AMEKICA.<br />

been published, giv<strong>in</strong>g accurate accounts <strong>of</strong> tlie early<br />

experiments and subsequent improvements <strong>in</strong> self-pro-<br />

pell<strong>in</strong>g mach<strong>in</strong>es, or <strong>locomotives</strong>, <strong>in</strong> England ; but <strong>the</strong>se<br />

works are too rare, volum<strong>in</strong>ous, and expensive, to be <strong>in</strong><br />

general circulation, and entirely beyond <strong>the</strong> reach <strong>of</strong> a<br />

large class who are <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject ; and even<br />

<strong>the</strong>n, <strong>the</strong>y br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> down only to a period an-<br />

terior to <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> railroad enterprise <strong>in</strong> this country<br />

while all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation upon <strong>the</strong> subject s<strong>in</strong>ce that<br />

time (a period <strong>of</strong> a little over twoscore years <strong>in</strong> dura-<br />

tion) seems to be wrapped <strong>in</strong> impenetrable mystery.<br />

To obviate, <strong>the</strong>refore, this difficulty for <strong>the</strong> fature, and<br />

to give to <strong>the</strong> public all <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation upon <strong>the</strong> sub-<br />

ject from <strong>the</strong> most reliable sources, and also to place<br />

it <strong>in</strong> such a form as to br<strong>in</strong>g it with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> reach <strong>of</strong><br />

every one, are <strong>the</strong> objects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present<br />

work, now <strong>of</strong>fered to <strong>the</strong> public.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r reason which <strong>in</strong>fluences <strong>the</strong> author <strong>in</strong><br />

publish<strong>in</strong>g his present work, arises Jfrom <strong>the</strong> fact that,<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> short period <strong>of</strong> ten or fifteen years, and<br />

especially with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last few years, under a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> forms, he has seen and read <strong>in</strong> our public journals<br />

nearly as many different accounts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early locomo-<br />

tives <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>, as <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> years which have<br />

elapsed s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>first</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction, all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m pur-<br />

port<strong>in</strong>g to be "true histories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e ever<br />

built and run <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>." But not one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se accounts,<br />

claim<strong>in</strong>g priority for its different eng<strong>in</strong>es and<br />

roads, produces <strong>the</strong> slightest evidence to susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

claim <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pioneers <strong>in</strong> this great mechanical<br />

achievement, which with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last halfcentury has<br />

revolutionized <strong>the</strong> trade and commerce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> civilized<br />

world. One claim to <strong>the</strong> credit <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>troduced<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> <strong>America</strong>n locomotive, we saw <strong>in</strong> an article pub-<br />
