We trust that we have now faithfully performed<br />

<strong>the</strong> task imdertaken by us, when we commenced <strong>the</strong>se<br />

pages ; and we believe that our readers will not enter-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong> a doubt, from <strong>the</strong> cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> au<strong>the</strong>ntic and reliable<br />

evidence we have brought before <strong>the</strong>m, that <strong>the</strong> fio-st<br />

locomotive ever run upon a railroad <strong>in</strong> this country was<br />

<strong>the</strong> "Stourbridge Lion," imported from England <strong>in</strong><br />

1829. We have shown that this mach<strong>in</strong>e was ordered<br />

by John B. Jervis, Esq., <strong>the</strong> chief engiQeer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Delaware<br />

and Hudson Canal and RaUroad Company, to be<br />

used upon <strong>the</strong>ir road, which connected with <strong>the</strong>ir canal<br />

that Horatio Allen, Esq., <strong>the</strong> assistant eng<strong>in</strong>eer under<br />

Mr. Jervis, was on a visit to England, and witnessed<br />

<strong>the</strong> experiments <strong>the</strong>n made <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> contest for <strong>the</strong> prize<br />

<strong>of</strong> £500 <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>the</strong> Liverpool and Manchester Kail-<br />

road for <strong>the</strong> locomotive that should perform certa<strong>in</strong> re-<br />

quisitions ;<br />

that Mr. Allen was <strong>in</strong>structed by Mr. Jer-<br />

vis to contract for three <strong>locomotives</strong> for <strong>the</strong> Delaware<br />
