FIRST LOCOMOTIVE-EiSrGINEEE. 167<br />

Mr. E. L. Miller, who contracted with <strong>the</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a Railroad<br />

Company to furnish <strong>the</strong>m with a locomotive suitable for <strong>the</strong>ir rbad,<br />

was beh<strong>in</strong>d time <strong>in</strong> its delivery. His excuse for be<strong>in</strong>g so was,<br />

that he could get no one at that season <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year to come out<br />

South with <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e, and, as <strong>the</strong>re was no one <strong>in</strong> Charleston com-<br />

petent to put <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e toge<strong>the</strong>r, he was forced to delay <strong>the</strong> shipment<br />

<strong>of</strong> it until late <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> season, when he would be able to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a competent person with him to erect <strong>the</strong> same. This letter <strong>of</strong><br />

Mr. MUler's was at <strong>the</strong> time published <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> daily papers <strong>of</strong> Charles-<br />

ton. He, however, brought <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e to Charleston, without his<br />

competent man, and called upon Mr. Thomas Dotterer to give him<br />

assistance <strong>in</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g it upon <strong>the</strong> road. I was at that time foreman<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mr. Dotterer's establishment, and wa,s requested by him ,to.<br />

undertake <strong>the</strong> job. I at <strong>first</strong> decl<strong>in</strong>ed, on account <strong>of</strong> Mr. Miller's<br />

published letter ; but, to please Mr. Dotterer, at last consented.<br />

I took Mr. Darrell, who, like myself, had served his apprenticeship<br />

with Mr. Dotterer, and was just out <strong>of</strong> his time, to assist me.<br />

After erect<strong>in</strong>g and putt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e on <strong>the</strong> road, I ran it for<br />

three or four days, hav<strong>in</strong>g Mr. Darrell with me all <strong>the</strong> time, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

turned her over to him as eng<strong>in</strong>eer, <strong>in</strong> which capacity he con-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ued until it exploded its boiler. I" might mention that, previ-<br />

ous to its explosion, Mr. Dotterer had cast and put under her<br />

(under my^ super<strong>in</strong>tendence) a pair <strong>of</strong> new driv<strong>in</strong>g-wheels, <strong>in</strong> place<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al, which were made <strong>of</strong> wood, and which gave out<br />

after runn<strong>in</strong>g about a week or ten days."<br />

" <strong>The</strong> second eng<strong>in</strong>e was called <strong>the</strong> ' "West Po<strong>in</strong>t,' and was buUt<br />

at <strong>the</strong> establishment <strong>of</strong> that name <strong>in</strong> New York, where <strong>the</strong> ' Best<br />

Friend ' was also built. Mr. Darrell ran <strong>the</strong> ' West Po<strong>in</strong>t ' while<br />

<strong>the</strong> ' Best Friend ' was be<strong>in</strong>g rebuilt. <strong>The</strong> third eng<strong>in</strong>e was <strong>the</strong><br />

' South Carol<strong>in</strong>a,' an eight-wheel eng<strong>in</strong>e, built at <strong>the</strong> same estab-<br />

lishment, on a plan furnished by Mr. Horatio Allen, chief eng<strong>in</strong>eer<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road, and was <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> eight-wheel eng<strong>in</strong>e ever built. Mr,<br />

Degnon came out with that eng<strong>in</strong>e on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> West Po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

company, and super<strong>in</strong>tended its erection. After he left, I gave her<br />

<strong>in</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> Mr. Darrell. So you will perceive that, so far from<br />

Mr. Degnon runn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ' Best Friend ' and teach<strong>in</strong>g Mr. Darrell,<br />

he did not come to Charleston until after Mr. Darrell had run <strong>the</strong><br />

' Best Friend ' until her explosion, and had been transferred to <strong>the</strong><br />

second eng<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> ' West Po<strong>in</strong>t,' and had run it for months. You<br />

are aware that, from <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g cast-iron drivers under <strong>the</strong><br />

' Best Friend ' until <strong>the</strong> completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> road, I had charge <strong>of</strong><br />
