HISTOKT OF THE TIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMEKICA.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y never call to m<strong>in</strong>d tliat a locomotive is a modern<br />

<strong>in</strong>vention, and, for want <strong>of</strong> access to works such as we<br />

have referred to, <strong>the</strong>y are not <strong>in</strong>formed that a railroad<br />

is an ancient <strong>in</strong>stitution (if we may apply such a term<br />

to such a sul)ject). <strong>The</strong>y never have dreamed nor ever<br />

imag<strong>in</strong>ed that this peculiar k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> road was <strong>in</strong>vented<br />

and <strong>in</strong> use several centtiries ago, l)ut, like <strong>the</strong> great<br />

auxiliary, <strong>the</strong> locomotive, was very defective and sim-<br />

ple <strong>in</strong> its primitive state,- and s<strong>in</strong>ce that time, like <strong>the</strong><br />

latter, has been subject to vast and cont<strong>in</strong>ued improve-<br />

ments.<br />

Before, however, we enter upon <strong>the</strong> subject for<br />

which <strong>the</strong>se pages were designed— " <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>-<br />

<strong>in</strong> our work <strong>in</strong> describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> peculiar k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> road<br />

upon which <strong>the</strong> locomotive travels, now known universally<br />

as <strong>the</strong> railroad ; and to such <strong>in</strong>formation as we<br />

Various devices have been employed, from <strong>the</strong> period<br />

when wheel-carriages were <strong>first</strong> used, for facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

movement over <strong>the</strong> ground <strong>in</strong> transportation. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

devices, however, were mostly limited to <strong>the</strong> smooth<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

levell<strong>in</strong>g, and harden<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way. <strong>The</strong><br />

early Egyptians, <strong>in</strong> transport<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> immense stones<br />

<strong>the</strong>y used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> erection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> vast pyramids from <strong>the</strong><br />

quarries, learned <strong>the</strong> advantage <strong>of</strong> hard, smooth, and<br />

solid track-ways, and <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> such, formed <strong>of</strong><br />

large blocks <strong>of</strong> stone, are said to have been found on<br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great road <strong>the</strong>y constructed for this pur-<br />

pose.<br />

TTie ancient Romans made also some approach to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vention <strong>of</strong> railroads, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebrated Appian<br />
