63 HISTOKT OF THE FIKST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMEKICA.<br />

<strong>locomotives</strong> ; ttat <strong>the</strong> annual expense for ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> stationary eng<strong>in</strong>es was likewise greater than for <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>locomotives</strong>, and consequently <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> transpor-<br />

tation Iby a stationary system was greater <strong>in</strong> like proportion.<br />

<strong>The</strong> system <strong>of</strong> locomotive-power, <strong>the</strong>refore, was<br />

entitled to <strong>the</strong> preference. Yet ano<strong>the</strong>r consideration<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenced <strong>the</strong> directors <strong>in</strong> its favor, which was this:<br />

Should an accident occur on any part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> railroad<br />

worked ty stationary eng<strong>in</strong>es, a suspension <strong>of</strong> work<br />

along <strong>the</strong> entire road would be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> conse-<br />

quences ; accidents aris<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> fracture <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> chairs, or from any derangement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fixed eng<strong>in</strong>es, would effectually stop <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tercourse along <strong>the</strong> entire l<strong>in</strong>e; while <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong><br />

locomotive-power an accident could only affect <strong>the</strong> particular<br />

tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> carriages drawn hj <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e to which<br />

<strong>the</strong> mishap might occur. " <strong>The</strong> one system," says Mr.<br />

"Walker, <strong>in</strong> his report, " is like a cha<strong>in</strong> extend<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

Liverpool to Manchester, <strong>the</strong> failure <strong>of</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle l<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong><br />

which would destroy <strong>the</strong> whole ; while <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r (<strong>the</strong><br />

locomotive system) is like a number <strong>of</strong> short and<br />

unconnected cha<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> any one <strong>of</strong> which<br />

does not <strong>in</strong>terfere with <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, and <strong>the</strong><br />

loss <strong>of</strong> which may be supplied by o<strong>the</strong>rs with facility."<br />

However, to determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> matter, a prize was <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

by <strong>the</strong> directors <strong>of</strong> £500 for a locomotive which<br />

should be produced by a certa<strong>in</strong> day, and perform a<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> duty, as follows<br />

:<br />

1. <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e must effectually consume its own smoke.<br />

2. <strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e, if <strong>of</strong> six tons' weight, must be ahle to draw after<br />

it, day by day, twenty tons' weight, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> tender and<br />

water-tank, at ten miles an hour, with a pressure <strong>of</strong> steam upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> boiler not exceed<strong>in</strong>g fifty pounds to <strong>the</strong> square <strong>in</strong>ch.<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> boiler must have two safty-valves, nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> which<br />
