<strong>The</strong>se difficulties are now removed, arid, tlie oppor-<br />

tunity be<strong>in</strong>g presented, tis long-cherislied determ<strong>in</strong>a-<br />

tion will no furtlier be delayed. In compil<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

<strong>history</strong>, all <strong>the</strong> authorities upon which his <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

is based will be set forth <strong>in</strong> such a manner that it<br />

must put at rest forever <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>t-disputed question,<br />

" When and where was <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> locomotive built and<br />

run <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual service <strong>of</strong> a company 2<br />

<strong>The</strong>se are questions <strong>of</strong>tentimes heard, when groups<br />

<strong>of</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers and o<strong>the</strong>r railroad-men are congregated<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r and discours<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong>ir universal topic,<br />

<strong>the</strong> merits and achievements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir favorite mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />

and how <strong>of</strong>ten is <strong>the</strong>re one <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> group who will<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Germantown and Norristown Railroad ; and so<br />

on, through <strong>the</strong> catalogue <strong>of</strong> railroads (not very volum<strong>in</strong>ous<br />

at that early day) : but none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are correct.<br />

True it is, that several companies, even at an early day,<br />

had <strong>locomotives</strong> constructed for <strong>the</strong>ir use, and put <strong>the</strong>m<br />

<strong>in</strong> practical service upon <strong>the</strong>ir several roads, those very<br />

roads just alluded to, but not, however, until <strong>the</strong> experi-<br />
