with both ends open, one presented to <strong>the</strong> furnace or<br />

fire-box, and <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r end open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> chimney.<br />

<strong>The</strong> fire-box, two feet wide and three feet high, attached<br />

immediately beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> boiler, was also surrounded<br />

with water. <strong>The</strong> cyl<strong>in</strong>ders, two <strong>in</strong> number, were placed<br />

on each side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boiler <strong>in</strong> an oblique position, <strong>the</strong><br />

one end be<strong>in</strong>g nearly even with <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boiler, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r end po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g toward <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> foremost<br />

driv<strong>in</strong>g pair <strong>of</strong> wheels, with which <strong>the</strong> conaection was<br />

made from <strong>the</strong> piston-rod by a p<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> outside <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> wheel.<br />
