<strong>the</strong> early <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> English eng<strong>in</strong>e " Stourbridge<br />

Lion," and <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> three <strong>America</strong>n eng<strong>in</strong>es built <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

United States, viz., <strong>the</strong> "Best Friend," <strong>the</strong> "West<br />

Po<strong>in</strong>t," and <strong>the</strong> "De Witt Cl<strong>in</strong>ton;" and no fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

evidence is required to establish <strong>the</strong>se facts.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se experiments on <strong>the</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a EaUroad<br />

paved <strong>the</strong> way for several o<strong>the</strong>rs which soon after<br />

followed, and at this day <strong>the</strong>y are looked upon as more<br />

remarkable, from <strong>the</strong> early date <strong>in</strong> locomotive enterprise<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y were attempted, and with such surpris-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g results. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most important <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se early<br />

efforts was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truck under <strong>the</strong><br />

front part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e, to assist <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

weight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boiler, and to give direction to <strong>the</strong><br />

mach<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g upon curves.<br />

As this truck attachment has now become so univer-<br />

sally adopted, and has never been patented, we will give<br />

a description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e ever built which used<br />

it. We' take it from a letter received by <strong>the</strong> author<br />

from Mr. David Mat<strong>the</strong>w, who super<strong>in</strong>tended <strong>the</strong> hands<br />

while construct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>e. Mr. Mat<strong>the</strong>w thus<br />

writes<br />

"<strong>America</strong>n locomotive "No. 1, second series, was built at <strong>the</strong><br />

West Po<strong>in</strong>t Foundery Works, for <strong>the</strong> Mohawk and Hudson Rail-<br />

road, from plans sent by John B. Jervis, Esq., chief eng<strong>in</strong>eer <strong>of</strong> that<br />

road. I left New York <strong>in</strong> August, 1832, with <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> charge<br />
