HISTORY OP THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMERICA.<br />

most splendid th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his l<strong>in</strong>e that was ever seen <strong>in</strong> this city. It<br />

is noth<strong>in</strong>g less than a pr<strong>of</strong>ile likeness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. Louis eng<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong><br />

two hose-carriages, and sixty-five members <strong>of</strong> that valiant and <strong>in</strong>-<br />

v<strong>in</strong>cible corps. <strong>The</strong> members are all <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> uniform <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> com-<br />

pany, forty attached to <strong>the</strong> drag-ropes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e, thirteen to<br />

<strong>the</strong> ropes <strong>of</strong> one hose-carriage and twelve to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r. We will<br />

take <strong>the</strong> liberty <strong>of</strong> styl<strong>in</strong>g it a panoramic view <strong>of</strong>*<strong>the</strong> St. Louis<br />

Fire Company, and we are compelled to say that <strong>in</strong> this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong><br />

panorama all o<strong>the</strong>r artists must bow <strong>in</strong> humble submission before<br />

<strong>the</strong> scissors and <strong>the</strong> skill <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unequalled Brown. This method<br />

<strong>of</strong> styl<strong>in</strong>g it will not be deemed <strong>in</strong>appropriate when we tell you<br />

that <strong>the</strong> whole picture occupies a space <strong>of</strong> twenty-five feet <strong>in</strong><br />

length. <strong>The</strong> representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e is beautiful <strong>in</strong>deed, and<br />

true to <strong>the</strong> very letter, and is all <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> a pair <strong>of</strong> small<br />

scissors and black paper. On <strong>the</strong> opposite side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> artist's room<br />

may be seen ano<strong>the</strong>r specimen <strong>of</strong> his skill <strong>in</strong> a second picture <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d, represent<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Missouri Fire Company, with her<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e, hose-carriage, and tender, with fifty-n<strong>in</strong>e men <strong>in</strong> all. <strong>The</strong><br />

company are represented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir w<strong>in</strong>ter costume as return<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

a fire or drill, <strong>the</strong> whole picture present<strong>in</strong>g a f<strong>in</strong>e and novel appearance,<br />

and are perfect and characteristic likenesses. <strong>The</strong> two<br />

pictures are <strong>in</strong>tended as decorations for <strong>the</strong>ir several eng<strong>in</strong>e-<br />
