<strong>in</strong> alter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> switch, to pass from one track to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Third mile—travelled <strong>in</strong> six m<strong>in</strong>utes ; two m<strong>in</strong>utes lost <strong>in</strong><br />

chang<strong>in</strong>g from one track to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> switch not he<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

right place.<br />

Fourth mile— ^was travelled <strong>in</strong> four m<strong>in</strong>utes and thirty seconds.<br />

Fifth mile—occupied five m<strong>in</strong>utes and twenty-five seconds.<br />

Sixth mile— ^travelled <strong>in</strong> six m<strong>in</strong>utes ; one m<strong>in</strong>ute was lost <strong>in</strong><br />

Seventh mile—travelled <strong>in</strong> five m<strong>in</strong>utes and thirty seconds ; <strong>the</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e stoped at <strong>the</strong> middle depot for fifteen m<strong>in</strong>utes to receive a<br />

supply <strong>of</strong> water.<br />

EigMh mile—performed <strong>in</strong> six m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />

N<strong>in</strong>th mile—performed <strong>in</strong> five m<strong>in</strong>utes audi forty-five seconds,<br />

<strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e travers<strong>in</strong>g an ascent <strong>of</strong> thirteen feet per mile, and en-<br />

counter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> numerous curves which abound <strong>in</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

road.<br />

Tenth " mile—performed <strong>in</strong> seven m<strong>in</strong>utes ; <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e still<br />

ascend<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> rate <strong>of</strong> thirteen feet per mile, and <strong>the</strong> road much<br />

curved.<br />

Eleventh mile— ^<strong>in</strong> seven m<strong>in</strong>utes and thirty seconds ; tTie same<br />

disadvantages <strong>of</strong> an ascend<strong>in</strong>g and curved l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> road be<strong>in</strong>g still<br />

encountered.<br />

Twelfth mile—<strong>in</strong> seven m<strong>in</strong>utes and thirty seconds ; <strong>the</strong> ascent<br />

here be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>creased to eighteen feet per mile and <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e curved.<br />

Thirteenth mile—<strong>in</strong> six m<strong>in</strong>utes and thirty seconds, <strong>the</strong> same<br />

disadvantages <strong>of</strong> an ascend<strong>in</strong>g and curved l<strong>in</strong>e be<strong>in</strong>g encountered<br />

as on <strong>the</strong> preced<strong>in</strong>g mile.<br />

" Mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> aggregate passage <strong>of</strong> thirteen miles, under <strong>the</strong> cir-<br />

cumstances detailed, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> space <strong>of</strong> one hour and fifteen m<strong>in</strong>utes.<br />
