similar <strong>in</strong> shape to a wagon ; <strong>the</strong> foremost part conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong> fuel, and <strong>the</strong> h<strong>in</strong>der part a water-cask.<br />

<strong>The</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e, when completed, was shipped to Liver-<br />

pool and ready for <strong>the</strong> trial, with <strong>the</strong> most sangu<strong>in</strong>e<br />

expectations <strong>of</strong> Mr. Stephenson <strong>of</strong> its success.<br />

COMPETITION FOE PEIZES.<br />

A GEEAT <strong>in</strong>terest was manifested at Liverpool and<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> country at <strong>the</strong> approach<strong>in</strong>g competition.<br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eers and scientific men arrived from all quarters<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world, to witness <strong>the</strong> trial <strong>of</strong> mechanical still<br />

about to be displayed.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> day appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>es were<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> spot, and entered for <strong>the</strong> prize<br />

<strong>The</strong> !N"oveltt, made by Messrs. Braithwait .and Ericsson.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Saits-paebil, made by Mr. Timotliy Hockworth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rocket, made by Messrs. Stephenson and Co., ISTe-wcastle.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Peeseveeance, made by Mr. Burtstall.<br />

<strong>The</strong> day <strong>of</strong> trial was changed from <strong>the</strong> Ist to <strong>the</strong><br />

6th <strong>of</strong> October, <strong>in</strong> order to give <strong>the</strong> new eng<strong>in</strong>es time to<br />

get <strong>in</strong> good work<strong>in</strong>g-order. Many thousand spectators<br />

were present. <strong>The</strong> Kocket, although not <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong><br />

entered, was, never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> ready for <strong>the</strong> trial.<br />

<strong>The</strong> piece <strong>of</strong> road to be used for <strong>the</strong> occasion was two<br />

miles <strong>in</strong> length, upon which <strong>the</strong> <strong>locomotives</strong> were to<br />

travel to and fro. <strong>The</strong> distance run by <strong>the</strong> Kocket<br />

was about twelve miles <strong>in</strong> fifty-three m<strong>in</strong>utes. <strong>The</strong><br />
