<strong>the</strong> Red River, and pass on to Puget's Sound, and also to Portland,<br />

Oregon. Few people w^io have not been up here have more than<br />

a fa<strong>in</strong>t conception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fertility <strong>of</strong> this belt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> great North-<br />

west. It is a magnificent country ; its climate is delightful ; its<br />

agricultural resources are superb ; it is large and wealthy enough<br />

to become <strong>in</strong> itself, if separated by an ocean from <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatest <strong>of</strong> nations, with a government <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> highest rank. But it is not isolated <strong>in</strong> its greatness. It is a<br />

vital member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> TTnion, and is about to prove itself to be <strong>the</strong><br />

one possess<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> most vigorous vitality. It is not one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

extremities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> doma<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union, but is, <strong>in</strong> fact, <strong>the</strong> great<br />

vital centre, hav<strong>in</strong>g for one arm <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>rn States down to <strong>the</strong><br />

Gulf, and for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r British <strong>America</strong> up to <strong>the</strong> ISTorth Pole."<br />
