THE AUTHOE'S ART. 305<br />

found on my arrival here last even<strong>in</strong>g. I am under very many<br />

obligations to you for not publish<strong>in</strong>g or pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> letter referred<br />

to by you without giv<strong>in</strong>g me <strong>the</strong> opportunity which you have so<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dly done to correct its many imperfections. I do not desire<br />

it to-be published while it conta<strong>in</strong>s a s<strong>in</strong>gle hard word or thought<br />

<strong>of</strong> any human be<strong>in</strong>g. I never have deliberately and wantonly<br />

wounded a fellow-be<strong>in</strong>g, though I have <strong>of</strong>ten done so, sometimes<br />

from a sense <strong>of</strong> duty and sometimes impetuously. Even if I were<br />

<strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed to lash, any one for ' lash<strong>in</strong>g's ' sake, I do not th<strong>in</strong>k your<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended volume would be <strong>the</strong> proper place for it. I do not prize<br />

my fame for <strong>the</strong> faculty <strong>of</strong> say<strong>in</strong>g severe th<strong>in</strong>gs very highly; and<br />

he who is gifted with <strong>the</strong> power and constra<strong>in</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> necessity<br />

<strong>of</strong> say<strong>in</strong>g harsh th<strong>in</strong>gs, or even <strong>of</strong> speak<strong>in</strong>g out his m<strong>in</strong>d and feel-<br />

<strong>in</strong>gs strongly, however honestly, <strong>in</strong> this world, is not apt to be<br />

blessed with <strong>the</strong> mild judgments <strong>of</strong> men himself. I trust now that,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g passed <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile stage <strong>of</strong> life, and got <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> author's<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e, you can look at <strong>the</strong> world fuU-face. I have <strong>of</strong>ten seen and<br />

admired your productions and <strong>the</strong> wonderful faculty <strong>of</strong> fix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

resemblance <strong>of</strong> men on paper with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> your scissors and<br />

black paper only. I have never failed to recognize a strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

likeness to <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al <strong>in</strong> all I have seen even <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most casual<br />

acqua<strong>in</strong>tance.<br />

" "With thanks for your k<strong>in</strong>dness, and <strong>the</strong> flatter<strong>in</strong>g notice you<br />

propose to take <strong>of</strong> my humble self, I am,<br />

" Dbae Sie : It affords me much satisfaction to embrace <strong>the</strong><br />

oppoi'tunity you have presented me, to express <strong>the</strong> very favorable<br />

op<strong>in</strong>ion I enterta<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>'your skill <strong>in</strong> your peculiar style <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g ; and with my best wishes for your success <strong>in</strong> your forthcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

work.* Very truly yqurs,<br />

" Deae Sie : I take pleasure <strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g testimony to your<br />

great aptitude <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g likenesses <strong>in</strong> your way, and <strong>the</strong> fidelity<br />

with which <strong>the</strong>y are executed. I wish you great success <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
