CLAIMS TO riEST LOCOMOTITES. 173<br />

to enter <strong>the</strong> columns <strong>of</strong> Ms valuable journal. Wlien<br />

<strong>the</strong> author tried to imag<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> appearance <strong>of</strong> this ex-<br />

cursion-party to and from Germantown— ^<strong>first</strong> push<strong>in</strong>g<br />

awhile, <strong>the</strong>n jump<strong>in</strong>g on for a ride, <strong>the</strong>n oif aga<strong>in</strong> for<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r push, and on aga<strong>in</strong> for ano<strong>the</strong>r ride— ^he was<br />

forcibly rem<strong>in</strong>ded <strong>of</strong> a scene he has <strong>of</strong>ten witnessed<br />

after <strong>the</strong> boss and his hands, on a railroad division,<br />

had knocked <strong>of</strong>f for d<strong>in</strong>ner, when a parcel <strong>of</strong> schoolboys<br />

amused <strong>the</strong>mselves with a ride upon <strong>the</strong> unoc-<br />

cupied hand-car.<br />

If Philadelphia will claim this specimen <strong>of</strong> a loco-<br />

motive as her share <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> enterprise <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduc<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

<strong>in</strong>dispensable mach<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> United States, and as<br />

late as 1832, she is welcome to enjoy it; and her<br />

mechanics maybe justly proud <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir handiwork ; for<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had certa<strong>in</strong>ly made no improvement upon <strong>the</strong><br />

Eiiglish <strong>locomotives</strong>, several <strong>of</strong> which were at that<br />

time (December, 1832) <strong>in</strong> this country ; besides <strong>the</strong> fact<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re had been built <strong>in</strong> this country, between <strong>the</strong><br />

years 1829 and '31, one most successful experimental<br />

locomotive by,Mr, Peter Cooper, <strong>of</strong> New York, which<br />

we describe <strong>in</strong> full, and also <strong>the</strong>re had been built <strong>in</strong><br />

1830 and '31 several <strong>America</strong>n <strong>locomotives</strong> for actual<br />

railroad service, which were <strong>in</strong> successful operation,<br />

as we have already shown, viz., <strong>the</strong> " Best Friend" and<br />

<strong>the</strong> " West Po<strong>in</strong>t," for <strong>the</strong> Charleston^ Railroad. An-<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r article upon <strong>the</strong> subject <strong>of</strong> early <strong>locomotives</strong>,<br />

or ra<strong>the</strong>r, as it is headed, "<strong>The</strong> <strong>first</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> cars by<br />

steam <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>," we read ia \ih.Q Boston Advertiser <strong>of</strong><br />

January, 1869, as follows<br />

:<br />

" <strong>The</strong> Fiest Stbam-^tba<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ameeica."— ^In <strong>the</strong> super<strong>in</strong>tend-<br />

ent's <strong>of</strong>fice at <strong>the</strong> ProTidence Railroad Station, <strong>in</strong> this city, is<br />

a picture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> steam railroad tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>, run from<br />

Albany to Schenectady, over <strong>the</strong> Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, <strong>in</strong><br />
