CliAIMS TO FIRST LOCOMOTIVES. 175<br />

<strong>the</strong> time on "black paper with, a pair <strong>of</strong> scissors, by a Mr.<br />

Brown, <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania, and lithograplied from a pho-<br />

tograph <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al picture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Connecticut Historical Society." Mr. Jarmy also goes<br />

on to describe and name <strong>the</strong> passengers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cars, and<br />

gives <strong>the</strong> cost and charges <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> importation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>the</strong> custom-house, New York, and <strong>the</strong> date,<br />

November 12, 1831, as <strong>the</strong> freight <strong>of</strong> said locomotive,<br />

<strong>the</strong> " John Bull," per schoone:^ Eclipse, from New York<br />

to Albany. With regard to this lithograph, which, no<br />

doubt, many railroad men look upon as au<strong>the</strong>ntic, <strong>the</strong><br />

author will say that, so far as <strong>the</strong> representation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e and tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> cars, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> passen-<br />

gers, is concerned, <strong>the</strong> copy really is correct, nor can<br />

<strong>the</strong> author complaia at his name be<strong>in</strong>g given as <strong>the</strong><br />

artist who took <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al sketch <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Connecticut<br />

Historical Society rooms ; but <strong>the</strong> public should be <strong>in</strong>-<br />

formed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> utter <strong>in</strong>accuracy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical portion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lithographic copy. <strong>The</strong> locomotive drawn by <strong>the</strong><br />

author on that occasion was not <strong>the</strong> English eng<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

" John Bxill," as Mr. Jarmy represents, but <strong>the</strong> <strong>America</strong>nbuilt<br />

locomotive " De Witt Cl<strong>in</strong>ton." It was sketched on<br />

<strong>the</strong> 9th day <strong>of</strong> August, 1831, <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong> excur-<br />

sion-trip with a tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> cars attached. Several experi-<br />

ments dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> previous month <strong>of</strong> July had been<br />

made with different k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> fael, to discover that<br />

which would be best suited for its use.<br />
