reduced to a fixed fact <strong>in</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r quarter. <strong>The</strong>refore,<br />

<strong>the</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pioneer <strong>in</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>first</strong><br />

<strong>America</strong>n locomotive constructed and put <strong>in</strong> actual ser-<br />

vice <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States belongs elsewhere, as we are<br />

prepared to substantiate as we progress <strong>in</strong> our present<br />

work. If, however, <strong>in</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g this, we should be com-<br />

pelled to descend too much <strong>in</strong>to m<strong>in</strong>utiae, so as to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

upon us <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> egotism from our readers, we will<br />

cilaim <strong>the</strong>ir forbearance <strong>in</strong> our anxiety to leave no stone<br />

unturned, to withhold no facts, and to br<strong>in</strong>g to our aid<br />

every item, however trifl<strong>in</strong>g it may appear, to establish<br />

<strong>the</strong> truth. In record<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> facts conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this<br />

<strong>history</strong>, <strong>the</strong>refore, <strong>the</strong> author will accompany each posi-<br />

tion he may assume with all <strong>the</strong> evidence upon which<br />

his <strong>in</strong>formation is based. <strong>The</strong>se authorities are from<br />

<strong>the</strong> statements <strong>of</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g witnesses, who are at this day<br />

(though far advanced <strong>in</strong> years) endowed with all <strong>the</strong><br />

vigor <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d which characterized <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />

period <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives, and are now enjoy<strong>in</strong>g an enviable<br />

share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> confidence and esteem <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fellow-citi-<br />

zens.<br />

<strong>The</strong> names <strong>of</strong> John B. Jervis, Esq., Horatio Allen,<br />

Esq., Benjam<strong>in</strong> H. Latrobe, Esq., Eoss W<strong>in</strong>ans, Esq.,<br />

and Peter Cooper, Esq., are well known and familiar<br />

to our railroad communities, as identified <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> early<br />

days with railroad enterprise <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong>. To those<br />

<strong>of</strong> our readers, however, who may not be acqua<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

with <strong>the</strong> character and reputation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se accomplished<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers and gentlemen, we will briefly state that<br />

John B. Jervis, Esq., for many years a resident <strong>of</strong> Kome,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> State <strong>of</strong> New York, is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest (be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

now nearly seventy-five years <strong>of</strong> age) and most skilful<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> which we write. He was<br />
