wHcli we live. <strong>The</strong> subject was soon before <strong>the</strong> coun-<br />

try ;<br />

and our readers will admire witli us tlie eloquence<br />

<strong>of</strong> Thomas H, Benton, <strong>the</strong> Missouri Senator, <strong>in</strong> his<br />

speech before <strong>the</strong> Pacific KaUroad Convention held iq<br />

St. Louis<br />

:<br />

" We live m extraord<strong>in</strong>ary times, and are called upon to ele-<br />

vate ourselves to <strong>the</strong> grandeur <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occasion. Three arid a half<br />

centuries ago <strong>the</strong> great Columbus—<strong>the</strong> man who was afterward<br />

carried home <strong>in</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>s from <strong>the</strong> Kew World which he had dis-<br />

covered—this great Columbus, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1492, departed from<br />

Europe to arrive <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> East by go<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> West, It was a sub-<br />

lime conception. He was <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> success, when <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tervention<br />

<strong>of</strong> two cont<strong>in</strong>ents, not dreamed <strong>of</strong> before, arrested Hs<br />

progress. Now, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteeth century, mechanical genius<br />

enables <strong>the</strong> great design to be fulfilled. In <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong><br />

barbarous ages, <strong>the</strong> sea was a barrier to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercourse <strong>of</strong> nations<br />

it separated nations. Mechanical genius, <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ventiag <strong>the</strong> ship,<br />

converted that barrier <strong>in</strong>to a facility. <strong>The</strong>n land and cont<strong>in</strong>ents<br />

became <strong>the</strong> obstruction. <strong>The</strong> two <strong>America</strong>s <strong>in</strong>terven<strong>in</strong>g have<br />

prevented Europe and Asia from communicat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> straight<br />

l<strong>in</strong>e. For three centuries and a half this obstacle has frustrated<br />

<strong>the</strong> grand design <strong>of</strong> Columbus. Now, <strong>in</strong> our day, mechanical<br />

genius has aga<strong>in</strong> triumphed over <strong>the</strong> obstacles <strong>of</strong> Nature, and con-<br />

verted <strong>in</strong>to a facility that which had so long been an impassable<br />

obstacle. <strong>The</strong> steam-car has worked upon- <strong>the</strong> land, and among<br />

enlightened nations, and to a degree far transcend<strong>in</strong>g it, <strong>the</strong><br />

miracle which <strong>the</strong> ship, <strong>in</strong> barbarous ages, worked upon <strong>the</strong> ocean.<br />

<strong>The</strong> land has now become <strong>the</strong> facility for <strong>the</strong> most distant com-<br />

munications, <strong>the</strong> conveyance be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>vented which annihilates both<br />

time and space. We hold <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terven<strong>in</strong>g land ; we hold <strong>the</strong> obstacle<br />

which stopped Columbus ; we are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e between Europe<br />

and Asia.<br />

" We have it <strong>in</strong> our ppwer to remove that obstacle, to convert<br />

it <strong>in</strong>to a facility, and to carry him on to his land <strong>of</strong> promise and<br />

<strong>of</strong> hope with a rapidity, a precision, and a safety, unknown to all<br />

ocean navigation. A k<strong>in</strong>g and a queen started him upon his great<br />

enterprise ; it lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> a republic to complete it. It is<br />

<strong>in</strong> our hands—we, <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States, <strong>of</strong> this <strong>first</strong> half<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century. Let us rise to <strong>the</strong> grandeur <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
