S<strong>in</strong>ce this photograpli has been <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> author, he has been <strong>of</strong>ten asked why <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

tra<strong>in</strong> are represented <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> unique and sombre style <strong>in</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong>y appear <strong>in</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ile, or black outl<strong>in</strong>e. To<br />

this <strong>in</strong>quiry he will reply by <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g those who are<br />

not familiar with <strong>the</strong> facts, that, from his earliest recol-<br />

lection, he has been gifted with a rare and peculiar<br />

talent or faculty (entirely <strong>in</strong>tuitive <strong>in</strong> him) <strong>of</strong> execut<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with wonderful facility and accuracy <strong>the</strong> outl<strong>in</strong>es or<br />

form <strong>of</strong> any person or object from a s<strong>in</strong>gle glance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

eye, and without any mach<strong>in</strong>ery whatever, but with a<br />

pair <strong>of</strong> common scissors and a piece <strong>of</strong> black paper.<br />

This peculiar style <strong>of</strong> outl<strong>in</strong>e portraiture, or shap<strong>in</strong>g<br />

exact resemblances <strong>of</strong> persons or objects with black<br />

paper, and commonly known as pr<strong>of</strong>iles, was <strong>in</strong>vented,<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> elder Disraeli, <strong>in</strong> 1757, <strong>in</strong> Paris, and<br />

called by <strong>the</strong> French silhouette. In <strong>the</strong> author this<br />

faculty was not conf<strong>in</strong>ed to shap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mere outl<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong><br />

persons or faces, but was extended to portray<strong>in</strong>g entire<br />

family groups, military companies, fire companies with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir eng<strong>in</strong>es and hose-carriages, sport<strong>in</strong>g-scenes, racecourses,<br />

and mar<strong>in</strong>e views, represent<strong>in</strong>g a harbor and<br />

shipp<strong>in</strong>g. All were executed <strong>in</strong> black paper, and with a<br />

pair <strong>of</strong> scissors. Hence, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same style he executed <strong>the</strong><br />

above-mentioned likeness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> locomotive " De Witt<br />

Cl<strong>in</strong>ton," with <strong>the</strong> cars and passengers, and afterward<br />

presented <strong>the</strong> same to <strong>the</strong> Connecticut Historical Society.<br />

This rare and peculiar faculty or gift was so strongly<br />

developed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> author, that all objects, when once<br />
