HISTOKT OP THE FIRST LOCOMOTIVES IN AMERICA.<br />

<strong>the</strong> colTimns <strong>of</strong> a November mi<strong>in</strong>ber <strong>of</strong> tlie New York<br />

World, on tlie subject <strong>of</strong> <strong>locomotives</strong>, tlms<br />

" Eighteen hundred men make a locomotive <strong>in</strong> one day— ^boiler,<br />

cyl<strong>in</strong>ders, frame, driv<strong>in</strong>g-wheels, truck, stack, cab, pilot, and<br />

tender complete— ^<strong>the</strong> speed <strong>of</strong> forty miles an hour, and <strong>the</strong> pov?^er<br />

<strong>of</strong> a thousand tons, created <strong>in</strong> a day.<br />

" On <strong>the</strong> 25th <strong>of</strong> April, 1831, a m<strong>in</strong>iature locomotive-eng<strong>in</strong>e,<br />

draw<strong>in</strong>g two cars, with seats for four persons, was set <strong>in</strong> motion on<br />

a track laid <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rooms <strong>of</strong> ' Peale's Museum,' <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Phila-<br />

delphia. Great numbers <strong>of</strong> people, not only from <strong>the</strong> city, but<br />

from distant parts, visited <strong>the</strong> museum to witness <strong>the</strong> performances<br />

<strong>of</strong> this wonderful mach<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

" Previous to that date only three attempts had been made to<br />

<strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong> Ipcomotives by <strong>America</strong>n mechanics. Two<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>the</strong> ' Phoenix ' * and <strong>the</strong> ' West Po<strong>in</strong>t,' had been built at <strong>the</strong><br />

West Po<strong>in</strong>t Foundery <strong>in</strong> 1830, for <strong>the</strong> South Carol<strong>in</strong>a Railroad;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> third, <strong>the</strong> ' De Witt Cl<strong>in</strong>ton,' for <strong>the</strong> Mohawk and Hudson<br />

Railroad, was completed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1831.<br />

" Two <strong>locomotives</strong> hkd been imported from England, one <strong>in</strong><br />

1829, for tl^e Carbondale and Honesdale Railroad, and ano<strong>the</strong>r for<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, <strong>in</strong> 1831.<br />

" <strong>The</strong> little eng<strong>in</strong>e amus<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> visitors at ' Peale's Museum<br />

was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vention and work <strong>of</strong> Mr. Matthias W. Baldw<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

a skilful and enterpris<strong>in</strong>g mechanic <strong>of</strong> Philadelphia.<br />

"In <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g year (1831) Mr. Baldw<strong>in</strong> received an order<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Germantown Railroad Company for <strong>the</strong> construction <strong>of</strong><br />

a locomotive-eng<strong>in</strong>e to run on <strong>the</strong>ir road. This was, at <strong>the</strong> time,<br />

a very formidable undertak<strong>in</strong>g. Only one mechanic <strong>in</strong> <strong>America</strong><br />

had yet succeeded <strong>in</strong> erect<strong>in</strong>g a locomotive that would draw more<br />

than its own weight on a horizontal track. Several unsuccessful<br />

attempts had been made, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> loss and discouragement to<br />

<strong>the</strong> experimenters. Mr. Baldw<strong>in</strong>, however, had confidence <strong>in</strong> his<br />

ability to surmount all diflSculties, and he agreed to build <strong>the</strong><br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e. Without tools, patterns, or models, he entered upon <strong>the</strong><br />

work, with only his genius to guide him, and on <strong>the</strong> 23d <strong>of</strong> Novem-<br />

ber, six months after receiv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> order, he placed <strong>the</strong> ' Ironsides<br />

on <strong>the</strong> road. Its success and <strong>the</strong> sensation which it produced are<br />

now matters <strong>of</strong> <strong>history</strong>. It is enough to say that it established a<br />

* <strong>The</strong> " Best Friend," name afterward changed to <strong>the</strong> " Phoenix.'"<br />
