Preliminary experiments conducted in our laboratory indicate that the use of a<br />

combination of sweeteners in chewing gums presents many advantages to the<br />

manufacturer and the consumer. Major U.S. chewing gum manufacturers have<br />

recently introduced acesulfame-K/aspartame-sweetened products.<br />

Several other sweeteners have been investigated. Experiments conducted<br />

with NHDC indicate that this sweetener is good in chewing gum applications.<br />

It is stable and provides an acceptable sweetness profile and flavor-enhancing<br />

properties (30). Stevioside is currently used in sugarless gums in Japan. Although<br />

the products lack the sensory qualities of saccharin- or aspartame-sweetened
