were noted on fasting blood glucose or on the disposition of an oral glucose<br />

load.<br />

X. REGULATORY STATUS<br />

In 1986 a Food Additive Petition was submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration<br />

requesting broad clearance for alitame (10). The petition requests<br />

approval of alitame as a sweetener and flavoring in specified foods in amounts<br />

necessary to achieve the intended effect and in accordance with good manufacturing<br />

practice. Table 5 presents the 16 food product categories requested in this<br />

petition.<br />

In addition to the United States, permission for the use of alitame in food<br />

has been requested from a number of other countries and regulatory agencies.<br />

Alitame was approved for use in Australia in December 1993; in Mexico in May<br />

1994; in New Zealand in October 1994; in People’s Republic of China in November<br />

1994; in Indonesia in October 1995; in Colombia in April 1996, and in Chile<br />

in June 1997. Alitame was reviewed by Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on
