are mainly useful, since they consume a considerable amount of mice. Practically, all<br />

these species are valuable game, but, due to their small numbers, hunting <strong>for</strong> some of<br />

them is <strong>for</strong>bidden, <strong>for</strong> the others it is restricted.<br />

Artiodactyles. <strong>The</strong>re are 3 species - Sus scrofa L., Capreolus capreolus L., and Cervus<br />

elaphus L.. In the river plain they do not stay <strong>for</strong> long, they come here only <strong>for</strong><br />

watering and resting. All the three species are game, their shooting is restricted. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

are valued <strong>for</strong> their meat and hunting trophies.<br />

Leporids are represented by Lepus europaeus Pall. It comes to the river plain to have a<br />

rest and take up fat.<br />

<strong>The</strong> most numerous and representative group of mammals in the River <strong>Tisa</strong> plain are<br />

the rodents. <strong>The</strong>re are about 15 rodent species, namely: Sciurus vulgaris L., Glis glis<br />

L. and Muscardinus avellanarius L., Rattus norvegicus Bark., Mus musculus L.,<br />

Apodemus agrarius Pall., A. sylvaticus L., A. flavicollis Melch., Clethrionomys<br />

glareolus Schreb., Arvicola sherman Shaw., Microtus arvalis Pall., M. subterraneus De<br />

Selys Longchamps. Glis glis, Microtus arvalis, Clethrionomys glareolus, and M.<br />

subterraneus occur only in places where the <strong>for</strong>est is close to the riverbed. Rattus<br />

norvegicus and Mus musculus, however, can be seen near human settlements. <strong>The</strong><br />

occurance of the muskrat is not impossible in this area. Mice settle in the river plain<br />

reluctantly, since the frequent floods cause great damage to their populations.<br />
