. Time Activity Section 9: HIV and AIDS Workplace Policy Activity 9.2: What is a HIV workplace policy? Activity Outline Objective: At the end of this activity, participants should be able to understand what a HIV workplace policy is and how to develop one. Duration/Timing: 1 hour and 30 minutes Materials/Resources: Appendix 14 PPT presentation, paper, pens. 45 minutes Before this session, the facilitator should review the PPT and make any changes as necessary. If there are any questions regarding the content of the presentation, you can contact the VSO China HIV and AIDS team. 1. Go through PPT presentation. 2. Important points to emphasise: There is no standard policy. Each organisation must develop a policy that is relevant to the local context, needs and resources of the organisation. Developing a policy is a process. Draft Implement Monitor Review Amend Implement Management support is vital in ensuring the success of the policy. Case-studies – organisation’s offer different things. Some may offer VCT, ARVs, others focus on prevention and referral support. 3. Summary – developing a policy is an important part of mainstreaming. It represents an organisation’s commitment to action. Some people may be wary of having a policy when others are not in place e.g. equal opportunity, confidentiality but it is the content of the policy that is the most important. Management support for implementation is essential. 45 minutes Remember only include what you can offer and what support is available. You can always amend later when your situation changes. Keep it simple and possible. In pairs or individually, ask participants to begin to draft their own workplace policy. Ask participants to think about their organisation and what they could realistically include in their policy. Explain this is just an exercise to go through 98
the process and get an understanding of how a policy could be developed. They can use the ILO guidelines and case-studies as examples. 99
