Background for True Statements 1. This statistic comes from the UNAIDS China website (www.unaids.org.cn). Check recent statistics when you are doing the session. 2. Although there is a lot of research and development into finding a vaccine, there is currently no cure for AIDS. ARVs work to reduce the volume of HIV in the body, but do not kill the virus. 3. HIV does not discriminate. Age does not prevent its transmission. The most at risk populations are ages 15-49. Engaging in risky behaviour at any stage of your life puts you at risk of HIV. 4. There is no way you can look at someone and know they have HIV. People can live with HIV without any symptoms for up to 10 years. The only way to know you have HIV is to get a blood test. 5. If people adhere to treatment, they can live long healthy lives. With ARVs, a nutritious diet and support from family and friends, people can live “normal” lives. However, there is always the risk of the drugs no longer working (drug resistance). Background for False Statements. 1. Although the prevalence rate in China is low (less than 1%), if prevention, care and treatment is not in place, HIV and AIDS can become more of an issue. A few years ago, UNAIDS estimated that by 2010 up to 10 million people would be affected by HIV in China. There are programmes for prevention and treatment in place but there are also gaps. The potential for a larger scale epidemic is always there. AIDS is an issue in China. Every province is affected and it is the responsibility of every individual to informed and aware of HIV. 2. This is a common myth in China. When the first cases of HIV were diagnosed, it was mostly among foreigners and overseas Chinese. This image of HIV has stayed. Stigma and discrimination also have a role to play here. People who are not informed about HIV often think that HIV is something that affects other people. 3. Sub-Saharan Africa has been the hardest hit region in the world. It is a common misconception that HIV and AIDS only affects Africa, especially with media 28
portrayals. However, HIV and AIDS affects every country, in its own unique way. HIV is an issue in China too. 4. HIV is not an air-borne disease. It cannot survive very long outside the body. HIV can only be transmitted through bodily fluids, semen, vaginal secretions and blood. 5. There is no way of looking at a person and knowing they have HIV. Only a blood test can determine who is HIV positive and who is not. 29
