. Time Activity Activity 5.1: Occupations Activity Outline Objective: To encourage participants to think about different perceptions. Duration/Timing: 30 minutes Section 5: Stigma and Discrimination Materials/Resources: Large open space for participants to walk around. 30 mins 1. Ask participants to walk around the room quietly and calmly. 2. Explain that when you speak they have to pose. 3. Shout “Freeze as a …“followed by an occupation. Participants should quickly freeze in a pose. 4. Ask participants to stay as they are and have a look around at each other’s pose. Once they have had a look, ask them to unfreeze if uncomfortable and explore the reasons for different poses in the room, talking about different perceptions. Gender may arise as a topic for discussion. Are certain roles associated with men or women? Why? 5. Repeat steps 1-4 again with different occupations. (Source: “Feel! Think! Act! . Time Activity Section 5: Stigma and Discrimination Activity 5.2: Stereotype Pictionary Activity Outline Objective: To encourage participants to understand stereotypes and how they arise. Duration/Timing: 30 minutes Materials/Resources: Flipchart paper and pens. Pieces of paper with different words. Alternatively you could ask people to act out the words. A small prize for the winning team. Before the session, write words on small pieces of paper to give to groups. Words could include different occupations, nationalities, and countries - anything that could conjure up stereotypes. Include a person living with HIV and AIDS. 30 minutes 1. Divide the group into smaller groups. 2. Give each group 1 flipchart paper. 3. Ask one person from each team to collect a piece of paper. They are not allowed to share this with the rest of their group. 4. They then have one minute to draw or act out this word for their group to guess. The group can guess as many times as they want in one minute. 5. Call time after one minute. Give the groups who answered correctly, one point. 6. Ask another person from each group to come up and repeat the process. 7. Tally all the scores and award the prize to the group with the most points. 8. If using flip-charts, bring them together and ask group to look and discuss any similarities or differences. The group should explore why they drew or acted out certain things, why we perceive people and places in a particular way. 9. Conclude that stereotypes are common but they can lead to problems.
